Well.. this morning was another majestic morning in the whitetail woods. I sat in the tree I sat yesterday afternoon and boy did it pay off. As I was setting up my climber, there were deer watching me. I didn't think anything of it because they usually resume their normal activities once your headlight goes out and you stop fidgeting up the tree. And that's exactly what they did. I was settled in the tree at 6:10 AM. For the next half hour I had a spike buck running does all around me and grunting. He was even underneath me for a good 15 minutes. He grunted 15 times before it was light out and yes. I was counting. Right when shooting light was beginning to come, the spike let out a snort wheeze. Not a snort wheeze like does do when they smell you or bust you, this was a buck snort wheeze. Then after the spike ran the does off, he came back to feeding under me. It was around ten to seven when he came back. When he stepped out a little bit from me, probably 10 yards and I was about 18 feet up. I was waiting for him to turn broadside because I was going to take him for my first buck. Then I saw this spike look up the ridge and grunt at a deer coming down the hill. I then saw the deer too and opted to wait to see what was coming. I couldn't really see antlers, all I really saw was body. Then he got around 25 yards and I saw antlers. I couldn't see if it had brows or not, but I knew it was a shooter for sure. so I drew back my bow and prayed that he would turn broadside. He turned broadside right when he was almost underneath me. As he was coming, I drew my bow back so when he stopped, I settled the pin on his chest and shot. Because of the steep angle, the shot in reality was probably 6 yards. I hit him in the spine. Immediately, he dropped. He then pulled himself on past my stand with his front hooves ( where have we heard this before?? ) and got himself inside a blown down tree. I then let my bow down to the ground and got down the tree as quickly and safely as I could to go put another arrow in him. When I got down to the ground, I grabbed my bow and went down there to shoot him again. Thats when I saw it wasn't a 6 like I thought it was, it was in fact an 8pt and it was a buck I've watched all summer long. It was Curvy. Curvy was named for his curved brow tine on his left side.

So I shot him again, but this shot hit high lung, front liver so I opted to shoot him a third and final time. This time it was perfect in the lungs. 30 seconds later, he laid his head down like he was going to sleep and sure enough he went to sleep. For good. I called Mike on the cell and he climbed down from his stand and met me. So then we stayed around my buck for about another hour waiting on more deer to move because he still hasn't shot a deer yet. But we saw some more deer, but no shooters.

So then we got him back to the house after a 100 yard and then a 200 yard ride with the Cart of Death. We took pics, gutted him and now he's hanging in the garage. I should be getting him mounted. After all, he is my first buck and one heck of a buck at that.

I know you've been waiting for the pics.. so here they are.. They're kinda crappy but I'll have better pics later.

Here's a good pic of Curvy's antlers. We measured him out right around 90".
