wtnhunt
I had seen 8 does come out about 5 Tuesday afternoon into our plots and it was really windy. They stopped in the grower plot and fed for a few minutes and then made their way on across the field into the woods. Felt like yesterday would be a pretty decent chance after school to get my 8 year old daughter back out. She has not been out with me since all the ice and bad weather hit. The temps were in the low 60's and it was really windy again, higher winds than Tuesday. Was hoping for the same group of does to come through again about the same time. It was really bad overcast all afternoon. About 4:30 I told her to put her book away and start watching the edge of the woods really close. 5 rolled around and nothing. We kept watching and around ten after 5 I was thinking it was about to get to dim for a shot for her even though legal shooting light would not have ended until like 5:30. Right about then I looked back and a single doe comes out from my right side, my daughter is sitting on my left and could not yet see the doe. It was really dim and I had her get over where she would be in position when the doe comes out in front of us and I told her I thought it was probably too dim for her to be able to take and make a ood shot with her mothers rifle. The doe made her way around and my daughter was ready, but I never raised my wife's .243. She seemed to be a little let down, so I raised the rifle and let her look through the scope and she had troubles seeing the crosshairs and then she better understood why I did not ever raise the gun for her to take a shot. The doe took off as I was raising the rifle, not sure if it was the wind or me. She asked if I could have made the shot and I told her probably so, but maybe we would have better luck today, it is not supposed to be quite so windy. After her having so many deer in the field and being unable to take a shot with the muzzleloader because she was too excited to now the deer coming out a little too late, I think she is learning some good lessons in hunting. She was happy we saw a doe and is really excited we are going to get back out the next couple afternoons, sure hope I did the right thing not letting her try the shot. wtnhunt
Re: Didnt feel quite right [ QUOTE ] How would she have felt if she had made a bad hit on the doe and it was never recovered? [/ QUOTE ] That was my thoughts especially on her first one, I really dont want to risk losing it. Sure hope she gets a good chance over the weekend. dogdoc
Re: Didnt feel quite right great choice---it is good to teach the young ones proper shooting ethics. When in doubt pass and wait for a better opportunity. It is not worth taking an "iffy" shot and wounding the deer.

Ravin R10 man
Re: Didnt feel quite right you did right William... she would have to live with a poor placed shot and a possible no recovery to boot. Not a good way to start out!!!
hutchies
Re: Didnt feel quite right I agree. I will not take a shot on anything if I think I may not kill it. My neighbor has shot two with his bow this year and lost both of them because of bad shots. Unless I can make positive identification of the deer and where I am going to hit it. wtnhunt
Re: Didnt feel quite right Closes this afternoon. Had some does in the other end of the field last night about 150 yards out and she never got a shot. 150 is just too far. Hope we have better opportunities this evening.
