Sharpening Broadheads?

Re: Sharpening Broadheads?

I have specific broadheads that I use for practice only.

I will go into the field with brand new blades ONLY. If you're shooting replaceable blade broadheads change them before you head out hunting and make sure the tips still have thier edge.

I would still suggest having a few xtra for practice only.

By the way, the targets that you mentioned are going to get torn up very quickly shooting broadheads into them. They are great for field points but broadheads will shred them.

Try the Morrell Yellow Jacket for broadheads. it's cheaper than the others and works much, much better and lasts a very long time.

YEPPERS ...I shoot Montec G5's now, and I have 3 broadheads set aside for target only and keep the rest razor sharp for hunting.

If I run low on hunting broadheads, I can always take one of my practice heads out of the practice and sharpen it up for hunting purposes only.

I don't shoot my broadheads a whole lot at by Block target. It's ussually the last thing I do before the season opens just to see if they are shooting the same as the field points and maybe give the bow a few tweeks. Other than that, I shoot field tips 90% of the time. Godd Block target are too expensive to chew the crap out of with broadheads all the time.

Re: Sharpening Broadheads?

I use practice broadheads of the same type I use when hunting. You can sharpen some broadheads very well but I recomend replacement blades for those that can be replaced. Nothing short of surgical sharpness is sharp enough when your hunting.

As far as a target, I like to use my 3d deer target. It has a replaceable kill zone and has weathered many years of broadhead pre-season practice.

Re: Sharpening Broadheads?

Here is my thoughts. Over the summer I shoot my broadheads once a week or so into my BLOCK. I have 2 onr for head one for tips. I never replace the blades unless i near robinhood one and its damnaged. A few weeks before the season I take my arrows to the local Gander MTN. My friend is the head of the Archery Dpt. He crests and refletches them, and at this time I replace the blades with brand new ones. This is a simple step that CAN help to ensure a clean kill. Always use SHAVING SHARP blades on your heads.
