98chevy
What kind do yall have. Someone posted about a high temp alarm. Im done with cheap ones or hammy downs. I dont have a fourtune to spend but would like a nice one. I also think I want a chest not a stand up. PROS AND CONS OF BOTH? My standup sometimes get bumped open or even freezes in side and the ice pushes the door open alittle. So I thought a chest might work. Oh also I forgot I have some back straps and hindcorters at my farm along with fish. So atleast im not completly out.(for yall that didnt read my bad bad day post My freezer stopped working i lost everything) :((
Hoosierbuck
I have a chest freezer that I got at Sam's Club that has been great. The con is that you don't have a lot of easy access to a million different things. With us, we usually just have a few different things, but lots of them, so it's not an issue so much. We use milk crates so you can have two tiers of different stuff with relatively easy access to the bottom layer. I also think it is more efficient since all the cold air stays in when you open it. Good luck to you on getting and filling a new freezer. HB
wtnhunt
We have two, one upright 12 cu ft and one 23 cu ft chest, both are Kenmore freezers. We bought the upright new about 12 years ago from sears, wanted it for deer meat as our freezer side of the refrigerator was not nearly big enough. The upright is in the house and is great for keeping stuff we need to get to without going out to the garage, is also nice to be able to grab stuff off the shelves. The chest freezer is in the garage, and is currently pretty full of beef. We have wire baskets for it, and used to use tyson chicken boxes in the bottom of it to hold stuff like frozen vegetables from the garden. With the beef in the freezer, there is no way to use the baskets, it is packed full. A neighbor gave me that freezer a few years ago, it is an older freezer, but works fine. Some freezers do have audible alarms, you can also buy some aftermarket alarms if I am not mistaken. If I was getting one to have just for deer and keeping small amount, would probably go with a large upright. Several good brands out there. Been happy with Kenmore here for the most part, would not hesitate to buy a Kenmore again. Another thing to consider if you are concerned about the door opening, some uprights and chests have locks. MUDRUNNER
My chest freezer is a Kenmore also. We've had it for about 8 years now without any problems. It had a scratch down one side so we got it a little cheaper. No bigge since we keep it in the garage. If I was going to buy a new one now I would probably get a big upright just to take up a little less floor space in the garage. Guest chappy
If it isn't frost free wouldn't an upright be easier to defrost?
gone_postal
Our Kenmore chest freezer is 25 yrs. old without a single problem! Looked in my Consumer Reports book and they say your best bet is a Frigidare, Kenmore or Haier brand. Chest freezers cost the least to buy and run, but self defrost uprights are the winner for convenience.........features to look for include interior lighting, power on light, and temperature alarm. As far as defrosting, don't think we've ever had to defrost ours once!! I've only seen a thin layer of ice on it, so why bother.......anyway, hope this helps and good luck filling the new one:)
terry264
Just to add to what some of the others said about the convenience of the upright type freezers, I think they would be more safe around kids unless you keep the chest type locked all the time. johnf
We have a Frigidaire upright that locks. I think it's about 25 cubic feet, maybe a little smaller. We got it about 10 years when our little chest went out. We've moved it about 5 times and haven't had a single problem with it. It's easy to clean and the door shelves are really nice.
