buckee
TEACHER APPLICANT Teacher Applicant after being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said: "Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, And Fill their every waking moment with a love for learning, And I'm supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits. You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self esteem. You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, how to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook and how to apply for a job. I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of anti-social behavior, make sure all students pass the state exams, even those who don't come to school regularly or complete any of their assignments. Plus, I am to make sure that all of the students with handicaps get an equal education, regardless of the extent of their mental, or physical handicap. I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone,Newsletter and report card. All of this I am to do with just: A piece of chalk, A computer, A few books, A big smile AND On a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps! You want me..To do all of this And Then you tell me... I CAN'T PRAY?

stevebeilgard
well, steve. you summed it up pretty well. my daughter is a christian, and was a proffssor at the university of wyoming. even as a professor, the same rules applied. her high education meant nothing to the school. unioncountyslayer
I took a religion class in college. The first day the professor said, "This is Religion 101, and what I teach is what you learn. Your religous opinions aren't welcome, so if you can't abide by this then there is the door." So it's bad even at Christian affiliated schools. Needless to say I saw the door he was talking about and walked right out of it.

RangerClay
Welcome to my world! In the words of John F. Kennedy "Modern cynics and skeptics, see no harm in paying those to whom they entrust the minds of their children a smaller wage than is paid to whom they entrust the care of their plumbing." wtnhunt
Yeah, sad isnt it Steve. Really think when I go back to college I am not going to go back to get teaching credentials.
muggs
Who's telling them they can't pray? I don't see that happening. They have every right to do so. Some only ask that they don't pray in class. ...Just some food for thought, not trying to start a debate.
AdvantageTimberLou
Sad but true, and its getting to be a dangerous situation. Kids with guns in our schools and kids with no family life and yet we want a teacher to make them our leaders but limit their resources to do so. God bless those teachers, for the ones you reach the rewards will be great and I appreciate it!
