woodshed
I shot my first deer from my ground blind today. It was a doe at 10 yards. I saw and heard the arrow hit her. It was quartering towards me but it was on or just aft of the shoulder about 1/2 way up her side. Possibly slightly higher than 1/2 way. I can't find my arrow and there was aboslutely no blood trail. Being a shot from the ground I don't know what happened to the arrow. If it was a pass through, I didn't hear it hit the thick brush behing her. If it made it through the brush it would have just flown god knows how far into a grass field. I think it stayed in her though. Do you think this is why no blood trail?? I cannot find her at all. For at least 150 -200 yards she had nothing but an open field to run through. You'd think it would be simple, but nothing!! It's 51 degreess now. It's going to be 45 tonight. Do you think if I find her in the morning the meat will be any good?
lungbuster12point06
I think the meat should be fine..............if she was qtr. to you most likely didn't get a pass thru and that is why the blood is sparse, if you noted the direction she ran off, you should start at the field edge where she entered the woods in the am, it is definitely easier to find blood in the woods than it is in an open grass field....................good luck! c_lou
With the shot being a bit high and from the ground, she may not bleed out for a while. With the entrance and exit wounds high it takes time for the body cavity to fill up with blood. Keep looking, get some buddies to help with a grid search. A high hit usually does not leave a good blood trail and your best bet would be to just start looking where you think she might be in the morning. If that doesn't work.. head for water and start a grid search there. Hope you find her!
dogdoc
and with a quartering to shot that arrow could be lodge in the off back leg. very tough to trail since there will be little to no blood. that arrow has to pass thru a lot of tissue on those quartering to shots. good luck---the meat will be fine if you find her. todd
wtnhunt
Good luck finding her. Few years ago, a doe I shot from a box blind whch was kind of a flat shot to where the doe was standing, the arrow ended up in some brush about 50 yards behind where the doe had been standing. If you did get a pass through, with the shot being flat, the arrow could have gone a good ways, dont think I would worry too much about finding the arrow right now though. woodshed
hey, thanks for your help. I found her this morning about 0745am. So she sat about 12 hours from the shot. She went 300 yards in a grass field about 6 inches high is it. I drove around in circles in that field last night trying to get my headlights on her. I just didn't think she would go that far. She went way down the field as it sloped down hill a good bit. No blood trail. Hardly any on her body. Just foam and a little blood out the mouth. The arrow was still in her. I had no idea she was quartering towards me so much. It went in her shoulder and the tip was sticking out at the waist in front of the opposite side rear leg. It hit her guts unfortunately. Tenderloins may be bad, but I think the rest will be fine,,,,don't you??? 50 and rainy all night. She was still warm in the cavity, but stiff from rigormortous (spell check). What do you think?? and thanks.
wtnhunt
Congratulations and good job finding her. Dont honestly know about the meat. Would think it should be fine, but would also think that 12 hours it would have been cooled down by now with the temps as low as you say. lungbuster12point06
Congrats on finding her...........I would think the meat would be fine, get her skinned as quick as you can to cool it down and if the meat does not look discolored or have a bad odor it will be ok.
