mandyjo62
So during archery season, my dad and I were walking around one morning and we had a pretty good sized bull walk right up on us, but we had no cover, out in the middle of an open area, had him at 15 yards and I was ready to draw. But, he never turned broadside to me or looked away, so I never got a chance to shoot. We had on scentlok and obviously he had no clue what we were. Anyway, for the first time since we've lived here (15 years), my dad drew an elk tag for rifle season. On Wednesday night, he shot my bull with a 30-06!! Here are some pics of him. My dad took him in to a taxidermist, we're getting a nice shoulder mount ($750:eek:). Will update when he calls and gets exact measurements! The taxidermist thinks that he's 10-12 years old, his ivories are almost completely gone. They also think he might have been a 7x8 at one time. One of his tines was broken off:( He was obviously on the downhill, so it's a good thing someone took him out:D

buckee
That's a real bummer you didn't get the draw on him. Next time, draw anyway, even if he doesn't want to turn broadside. The worse that can happen is that he bolts and runs right a way, but at least you tried. You'd be surprised sometimes. I've drawn on a few deer up close that were looking right at me, and they stopped as I drew, turned sideways, and looked at me, just long enough to take the shot. Up that close, it's worth the try. ;) (rather that wondering about it later;)) Congratulations to your Dad. That Elk is awesome.

mandyjo62
Buckee, I would have, but I moved and he took off anyway. We watched him run for 200+ yards, then he disappeared off into the trees. Plus, elk here don't care what you are. They're not curious like the deer are. I've had does come up to a ground blind while I was in it just to see what was up. Elk will just run...
