wtnhunt
Well, could not have asked for better conditions this weekend so far, my 11 year old daughter has been pretty excited about this youth hunt, I have been kind of concerned about activity with the full moon and seemingly low number of deer still in this area. Weather has been just about as perfect as we could ask for, low 40's overnight with a light wind, the wind yesterday was perfect for the stands we sat. Yesterday we put in a good bit of time and got skunked for the day, but did see some turkeys in the afternoon that were pretty humorous to watch just before they flew up to roost. This morning, was just a little bit cooler than yesterday, but seemed like a great morning with a light fog rolling over the field, just felt like it was going to be a good morning. I knew we would see something if we sat long enough. About 7:30, behind us, heard some movement down the hill and I could not see for the tree and my daughter sitting on that side of me. She says deer, there is a deer. She says it is a spike, I don't want to shoot a spike, and not two second later she says she sees another one. I was trying to see around her as she says the other one is a 4 point and she wants to take it. So, I raised her rifle to the rail while the deer were out to the right side about 7 yards away, and put the but in her lap. The deer were on our right and coming around in front of us, and I could see them both now. I whispered to her to raise up her rifle to her shoulder when they had their heads down, but think she was too excited and the spike out in front spotted her as she was trying to get in position. Both deer at that point were less than 15 yards out in front of us, and I could see the second one was a 5 point not 4 point, but she had the rifle just about in position when the spike out in front saw her and blew. He trotted to the left towards the end of the field heading to the woods and the deer she was planning on shooting also took off before she ever had a chance to look through her scope. Neither took off hard, and they did slow to a walk before heading into the woods. Hoping this afternoon we will have a little better luck and she will be a little more conscientious of her movement when she is raising her rifle. We got busted, but she did see some deer and she did enjoy it. So I guess the hunt was a success, just hoping we have a little better luck this afternoon. Rhino
Sounds like it got exciting for both of you. That extra set of eyes out there sure makes it that much harder to help a youngster get ready for a shot. I can remember dealing with the same thing before when my son was young. Sorry it didn't work out for you on that hunt. Good luck this afternoon William.

wtnhunt
Thanks Al and Tom, we went out kind of early Sunday afternoon, and some yahoo was shooting along a property about 400-500 yards to our East from about the time we walked out up until right at dark, shooting a shot or two about every 5 minutes or so. No clue what they were shooting at, but dont think it helped us at all, we did not see a thing.

wtnhunt
She will get to go some during the gun seasons still, so we still have hopes she will get a better opportunity. Afraid we are going to have to find somewhere away from home to hunt though Tom. Just not the kind of deer around here anymore that there used to be. Saw a lease in the paper I might check into. Rhino
Sorry about the noisy afternoon hunt William. Sounds like a group of people thought they needed to sight in a lot of rifles before the gun season opens for everybody. Hope the new place you're checking out works out as a 2nd place to hunt without that kind of disturbance going on all afternoon.
