Turkeygirl
Andy and I were out this morning. He radios me around 9am, says a deer coming my way. Couple minutes later she comes trotting along the field edge inside the woods, cross the creek and I draw back, BAH, and she stops. I thought 20 yards, turned out later morel ike 23-24 yards. I release and I hear the arrow hit, something. The turns, runs out to the field, stops, then runs across the field into a brushy swamp. So I tell Andy, get down, find my arrow. It had a little blood on the one blazer and a tiny bit on BH but not covered...a little fat on it. There was some shave white hair where I hit her, a little brown mixed in, very little. We wait for a bit then go to track her. I had some blood in the woods, not alot but some then we pick up her trail in the woods on the other side of the field. There was a bit where she stopped and some splatters here and there. She kepy zig zagging through all this briars/goldenrod/ brushy swamp. We lost her trail like 2-3 times then found it. Seemed like she was bleeding more as the trail went on... Random blood clot here and there. Then Andy stops and nocks an arrow, she's bedded in front of us 10-15 yards in the goldenrod. He guessed where her chest was and shot, but shot right over her! She got up and ran off through the goldenrod. Where she was bedded there was a few drops of blood but the trail leading up to her bed had quite a bit of blood. Well where she runs we find some blood and blood clots on the goldenrod then nothing! We look and look and the blood just stopped! She must have clotted up bedding down. I'm pretty sure I hit her low enough, she'll be fine, but still....the blood was kind of bright red. What do you think, how low did I hit her?
Shawn
Ruth you may have hit her low enough in the brisket where it didnt touch vitals. Just fat and meat. It can happen, i hit a doe with the bow a few years ago right through the vitals. or so i thought. i hit that "dead zone" where theres nothing to hurt. Same thign though, she bedded down and stopped bleeding. She'll probably be fine, just a little aggravated. Sorry you didnt recover her. hoytbowhunter
The same thing happened to me three weeks ago it really sucks!!!!! By the way you discribe the way that the arrow and blood trail looked it sounds like you hit her in the brisket and if thats the case then theres a 95% chance that she'll be just fine. Good luck with the rest of you're season
Turkeygirl
Thanks guys...she definitely didn't seem to run with any problems...I'm going back out shortly to give it a go, see if Andy or I can put a deer on the ground. He has yet to fill a tag this season.
Tominator
Fat on the arrow, classic low or brisket hit. I've done that before. In fact, on one doe I actually saw this deer bed down, and then after sitting there for 1/2 hour or so, she got up and trotted away. My theory is is that they lay right on the cut to stop the blood flow, and I'd bet that's what she was doing when you jumped her again. bright red blood, clots of blood, fat on the arrow, little blood on the fletch. I'm betting she's fine. I feel your pain, I lost one today too.
