LifeNRA
Being an Information Assurance bubba I can tell you the number one reason why people (The ones that have the Anti-Virus software already installed) get a virus or whatever is because they fail to update their current anti-virus software and keep it current with updates. People often get annoyed a couple times a week when they are using their computer and the little update icon flashes saying that an update is available. Most people just ignore them. Norton is pretty good if it is kept updated;). The best defense is to make sure you know what you are clicking. I never click on a link that I don't know is trust worthy. Also if I don't know the email sender, I don't open up any emails either. I use Norton and manually update this about 2-3 times a week, absolutely no issues here! I also use ZoneAlarm and Adaware, again no issues! http://www.lavasoft.com/ http://www.zonealarm.com/
wtnhunt
Software I am running from trend micro updates every morning I get on the computer. Think AVG also auto updates every morning. The free version of AVG anti spyware you do have to manually update.
Guest Mountain_Dragon
I use McAfee with auto-updates. It updates almost daily, sometimes twice a day. That coupled with Spybot has kept me problem free for over two years now. If you use Spybot make sure you update it frequently also.
NS whitetail
I downloaded Avast awhile ago and it seems to work fine
ParrotHead
Spybot and Adaware are good, good enough to clean out most spyware programs and running them from time to time is a good idea. What I would suggest is getting yourself a good firewall to start with and that will eliminate a lot of problems before they become problems. I use Zone Alarm (purchased and not the free version) however the free isn't bad. I've never talked to anyone that had anything negative to say about it. Install it and your firewall will block all intrusions unless you've specified it as a trusted site. So unless Microsoft starts sending malware out as updates, you've fairly safe! Good luck
