buckee
I decided to go hunting this morning, even if I was late after dropping Diana off at work at 8:00am. I was just going to quietly slip into the pump house below the farm, so I wouldn't bump any deer, but decided to head over to my favorite spot by the stream instead. I didn't even get to sit down, because on the way over, out runs a big fawn, from the bush, right in front of me, followed by Mama. I brought the gun up quick, but they ran down the field almost straight ahead of me. They both stopped by the stream, and looked back at me, so I just lowered my head and kept walking toward the corner, where I was going to sit. She never moved, and although I wasn't walking straight toward where she was, I was closing the distance fast. I got about 30 yrds from her and brought up the gun, but she started to take off, so I let out a "Maaaaaaa" and stopped her just long enough for the shot. She looked like she was going down, but recovered and jumped the stream. I thought I saw her go down on the other side, so I slowly waked over there. No deer. I crossed the stream, nice and quiet, and stuck out toward the next small field, There she was, standing there, wobbling on her feet, so I just stayed put waiting for her to drop. Then out of the bush comes this dang sheltie. He was after the fawn, and took off back in. A few seconds later, out he comes again, looked at the doe, and off he went. I was going to fire a shot over his head, but I had inadvertently, ejected my next shell.....THANK GOD....because there were two old guys (dog's owner), back in the bush, right behind where the deer went in. I'm soooo glad I didn't shoot that dog, or even in it's direction. Thank you Lord !!! I yelled at them and told them to call off the dog, but I think they were too old to hear me..LOL I went in to see these guys, because they were on Native land, where no one can hunt, but natives. They apologized, and I asked them where they last saw the deer. I went over there, and there she was laying about 15 yrds, beyond where they pointed too. She had her head up, so I just waited a few minutes, hoping she would expire quickly. I can't hunt this bush either, but I can retrieve my deer there, so I didn't want to fire another shot. Her head went down, so I figured she was almost out for the count, so I took out my buck-knife and slowing walked toward her. I got within a few yrds, and up she jumps. She ran another 15 yrds, stopped and stood there wobbling. I just stood there until she laid down again. I backed off, and called my buddy Steve to come and give me a hand if he could, and just stayed back and waited about 20 minutes. I knew Steve would be there shortly, so I sneaked over to where I could see her, and she was still breathing. I sneaked up real close, and she tried to lift her head to smell the air, because she was directly down-wind, at about 10 yrds. She put her head back down, so I slowly moved in. I got about 10 ft from her, and rushed her, holding her head, and slitting her throat real quick. She was thrashing around pretty good, and clipped my hand with her front hoof...OUCH. I let her go, and fell backwards real quick once I slit her throat (thank God for sharp knife:)), and she jumped to her feet and ran another 10 yrds before piling up. I backed off and waited for my buddy Steve. 2007 Blacktail Doe My Hand It's amazing how far a deer will go, and how long they last on adrenalin. That doe was double lung shot, liver shot, one pellet in the gut, and had a broken front leg, and she still managed to go another 100 yards after that stupid dog came on the scene. Nut
Congrats Steve. I got a doe tonight also. 1st one I tagged with my name on it since 2003. I shot it at 30 yards ,it went 30 yards and went down. It was dead in minutes. No pics since my camera went kaput 2 weeks ago. Funny thing is a new one my mother-in-law got me is on the table unopened now after I already took the deer to get processed.
