carbonhunter
I was reading about the Iowa hunt Ryan had earlier this year, it sounded great right up untill he took the shot, you read the story and make the ethics call yourself, but he does say the arrow "entered in the hind leg" and the deer was bolting when he took the shot???? I think realtree would look these things over a little better before posting them for all to read. granted the deer died and he got a great buck......but it sounds a little shady to me. Norm Sauceman
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page I have heard of folks who make ONLY hind quarter shots..I couldn't, but I gusee some folks do.. I know my dad had two different arrows deflect off of two different limbs on two different bucks..He hit them bot in the hind quarters and they went less than 40 yards and fell dead as a door nail... Guest KSNimrod
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page It also says that it hit the off shoulder. Sounds like he picked the right angle to me. Realtree posted a real life hunting story. He made a killing shot on a great deer. I'd lighten up a bit on the "shady".
carbonhunter
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page KSNimrod....i wont lighten up on the "shady" comment..because thats exactly what it was.....an arrow that hits in the hind quarters has to pass a large hip bone, go through the roast, stay under the backbone, get, passed a slough of ribs before it gets anywhere near vitals....maybe with a firearm, but with an arrow, not only is it shady it borders on unethical. Maybe he got the angle right...Im guessing he just got lucky
JimT
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page I do not think he did it on purpose??? So to me this post holds no water. No one wants to go out and make bad shots on deer. But thats hunting. It happens. If anyone who has killed -alot- of deer says they made great shots 100% of the time, they are probably lieing. Guest KSNimrod
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page So you're contending that he placed his pin on the deer's ham, thought to himself "To **** with fatal I just want to cripple this deer!" and let her fly? Cause that WOULD be shady. I'm saying you don't know that (and it's foolish to assume that) and to call "foul" is out of place. Have you ever seen a deer duck or turn at a shot? Ever had a deer start to move as you released? Are you unethical?? He'd probably be the first to say he got lucky. I'd like to say congrats on a great deer. fisherguy
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page [ QUOTE ] Right when I drew my bow back and settled in on him, the giant buck bolted. But, I quickly followed and released and managed to make a decent shot…Right before I shot the deer, it bolted out of the screen…the arrow went in through the back leg, hit the off side shoulder and backed out [/ QUOTE ] I must say his own words indicate he took a running shot at a deer that was at a very steep quartering away angle. That shot may have workd out alright but it is not one to take. Sure we have likely all made a bad shot before, but taking that shot is just looking to cripple a deer. I will say this, at least he didn't lie and say it was a standing still, quartering shot.
Guest KSNimrod
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page fisherguy, I understand what you're saying. I just get a bit riled when people are quick to jump on a guy when he made a killing shot. I don't know Ryan but I imagine he'd prefer a perfect broadside shot or slightly quartering away. Fact is he made a fatal shot on the deer. What's next, time limits on how long it takes the deer to expire?

I think he was lucky not to wound a "bolting" buck with a bow. But, I could be wrong.

What's next, time limits on how long it takes the deer to expire? ____________________________________________________________ Your joking right, I will always be quick to jump a "pro" for taking such a shot especially when its going to pasted on the front page of a national hunting company/org. its easy fuel for anti's and these guys need to show a higher ethic of woodsman ship, think of all the newbies who read that, and said to themselves "he shoots deer in the butt so i can too". I will look across alot of ethics stuff because each hunters skill is differant, but shooting at a running deer and hitting him in the butt is anything but ethical. Dont try and get cute "time limits on bs. bs bs bs bs bs" He made a lucky shot. but to each his own..go ahead and keep shooting deer in the butt. edit: you ask if i have ever had a deer turn or duck the shot...yes, but it moved after i pulled the trigger, he admits that the deer was bolting before he was even in the vitals, thats a bit differant than a deer jumping the string. Ive let down on deer that started moving before i could get off a shot.
Guest KSNimrod
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page It's not any more fuel for the "antis" then they already have. They don't give a rats a** what kind of shot was taken they are ANTI'S. They don't want ANY shots taken. In Ryan's story he didn't come out and say "I took a high percentage butt shot. I highly recommend them." Some hunters would say that your comments give fuel to the antis. But I don't buy that either. You have ethics that are such that they cause you to question the wisdom of Ryan's shot. Personally I'd like to think I'd have held off myself. I guess where I'm coming from is the mindset of: If he was your hunting buddy, brother, father, etc. how would you address it. It's not a matter of not questioning it but rather one of tone. Speaking of tone, my apologies for mine. I just reread my posts and I come across as kind of a jerk.
rossman
Re: Ryan Mcann(sp) hunt on home page These guys get behind the cameras and they think they are god. about a month ago, on realtree's homepage, there was a story of how two hunters missed at 60 yards. I posted what I though about the shot and many people had excuses for them. One of the hunters was named "ginger". This year there have beend many un-ethical shots from these so-called pros. Great, they can hit a bulls-eye from 60 yards. But a live animal is different. I think these un-ethical shot takers are making a bad name for realtree. They should never be allowed in front of a camera again and they do not deserve to hunt these areas with world class bucks. It's alot easier to find a deer when you have "team realtree" with you. Maybe this is why they think they can get away with it.

I didnt mean for my tone to be rude either bud just trying to get some conversation going on the subject. I figure the more we **** about it here on the forums the more realtree will take notice and maybe put a stop to these things. Rossman i actually disagree'ed with you before but can see where you are coming from now, I tend to stay away from the distance thing just because I watched too much of Chuck Adams. I can see where you where coming from now. I can tell you that if any of my friends or hunting buddies took that shot, especially on that quality of an animal, they would never be seen in the woods with me again. kill or no kill!
