Was sitting in a deer stand overlooking a feeder when this coon decided he was hungry. Bad decision on his part, because there were no deer around, so he became my first points for this year :D

Then after it got dark on Thanksgiving night, I loaded up the AR, spotlight and a new caller a buddy built me and went out to see what I could get to come in. At the first stand, about 1 minute into the calling this fox showed up :). Nothing else the rest of the night, but at least the first stand was good.

A Tree Full

Well each year we have always had a problem with raccoons raiding our corn feeders. It wouldn't be so bad if all the did was eat a little corn, but these guys are super destructive to say the least. After replacing several feeder motors due to the raccoons breaking the shafts off them, I decided it was time for a little payback. I took one of my closed reed calls and started off with what I call a soft raccoon chatter. I hit the big tree with my mag lite and I thought someone had placed a Christmas tree out in the woods. There were eyes glowing everywhere. I shot 8, lost one in the fork up in the very top of the tree and I think 3-4 others escaped. I apologize for the picture being a little graphic, but one took a 32 gr. Hornady V-Max right between the eyes.

Well it was a long weekend. 2 days worth of hunting two shot one bad hit and a lost dog. They just arent coming yet. Maybe when we get some snow they'll be more aggresive or we'll just have to wait for mating season when the howls work so good.

Anyways here's the hunt if your interested. Got to the 1st set at sunup and we set up overlooking a flat that leads to a riverbootom. AWESOME looking country and yotes were howling all over. My friend and I were setting up decoys, getting the seats situated, adjusted the bipods, etc. etc. All they while I notice a "bush" down the fence row and don't pay much attention. Can't be a yote with all that movement right? So when I get set up I put glass on the "bush" and it was a dog. Just staring at my decoy. Couldn't understand how it didn't see me. Anyways it's not looking at me so I give a couple short bursts and she charges to the decoy for about 4 steps. She then stops and looks behind her. Any experienced coyote hunter knows what that means so I wait thinking I may get a double. She sits for a second or two the just starts walking off! Looked like she was in a bit of a hurry so I dumped her. Did some Ki Yi's but nothing else came. CAme back to that spot and did some female invites hoping the mate may pop in but nothing. Hunted till dark and thats the only yote we saw all day other than runners while we were driving. It's just not happening yet. Oh well! The season has just begun! At least I'm on the board.

Hammered another today. Been a tough season but things are looking up. Called in a double saturday, the female was HUGE but she hung up. Hit the cottontail and her hubby came running. The wind was blowing about 15 mph and he started straight in but decided to wind us which he did. So we blew that setup, then later I called in a single. He never showed himself to me though, then I stood up and off he went. Busted!!! So thats 3 in with no kills.

Today I went out and after about 10 minutes I called one in but he wouldn't come closer than 329 according to the bushnell. Anyways I missed by just a hair over the top. Still learning this AR. About 2-3 minutes later I saw one way off in the distance. She wouldn't come though..................until I hit the pups in distress. Man she came in from at least a half mile out. AWESOME!!! She started to downwind me but I gave a bark and she stopped, big mistake. 160 yard shot, broadside, 52 grn hollow, no exit. Beautifull. Well hopefully I got the jitters out for this season and I can get to gunning. Man my heart was racing on this girl. Very exciting when they come from that far away. Later I had another one that hung out about 1/2 mile away. Just couldn't get it to budge. Looked like a monster. There's always tomorrow.

This has been a challenging year. I've called in 12 in the last 5 hunts. Been busted more than I'd like to admit and missed three easy shots so far. I just can't seem to shake the rust. Missed a 160 yarder tpday, for some reason I thought it was 300 yards out and acted like a rookie. Did manage this stinky old mangy dude. He was a sneeky bugger, darn near got away. Sorry the pic isn't the greatest. He's there though.

Dec 29 night hunt ended up with 3 more coons. At lest there is a few less coons raiding the feeders now, but there needs to be lots more of them to go :)

Saturday night I went out to a lady's place that told me she had been losing a few baby goats. At the second stand this fox showed up just a couple minutes into the calling. I thought I was going to have a pretty good night, but then the clouds kinda disappeared and the moon came out. I called a few more spots, but didn't see anything else.

Went out Sunday afternoon to my deer stand to see if some hogs would come out to the feeder, and before I got in the stand I hung the new foxpro caller in a tree about 50 yards from the stand. I was getting tired of waiting on the hogs, so I turned on the caller and this little fox showed up. I went across the pasture to try to call up something by the tank, but the hogs showed up over there while I was sitting and letting things calm down before I started up the call. So I just loaded up the hog and the fox and headed back to town. Going to go again next weekend and see what I can call up with the foxpro :)

Went out Saturday night out at my uncle's to try the foxpro a little more. I seen several sets of eyes at all the places I called at, but with the moon so bright I think they were seeing me before I was seeing them and I couldn't get them to come on out for the shot. I did manage to call up a pair of coons and got one of them, and a pair of greys and got one of them :D
