NYBUCK
A buddy of mine has been bugging me to come out to the western part of NY to hunt with him for a while but I didn't think that I could swing it with all the trips I had going on this year. Well I hunted around here on the week-end of October 27th and saw one little 5-point that I passed on and Wayne my brother-n-law hunted hard for two days and saw absolutely nothing. It was pretty discouraging and decided maybe I did need a change of scenery. John, the other guy going to Ohio with me and also introduced me to the guy who lives out near Buffalo asked me if I was sure I didn't want to go. He was leaving on Halloween and if I wanted to go I had to let him know. Well Monday the 29th, work really sucked and that was the straw that broke the camels back. I asked my boss if he minded and he said nope, take off. So I left work at 10 on Wednesday and had to wait around the house for the furnice guy to come and service it. Well, turns out he said I needed to put in $1200 for parts in a old worn down boiler or spend $5000 for a new one. Great !!!!!! So much for a simple service call. Anyway, we finally get loaded up and head out about 1 PM. We arrive at our destination about 5:30. He actually lives south of Buffalo in Erie county and has some really amazing property to hunt on private land. The property I would be hunting is 150+ acres and he just started managing it for 3 1/2 year old bucks. I was told I can't shoot anything unless I am going to put it on the wall. Fine by me. Thursday morning we are up at 5 am and John heads to another farm with another friend and me and my "guide" head to his property. Now I must regress a little again. Last year when we went to the Harrisburg show all four of us bought the Millennium tree stands. These guys also bought about 40 recievers so now we can all use this stand, we just need to slip it into the reciever and hunt. Here is the web-site, http://millenniumstands.com/Page3.html They are by far one of the most comfortable tree stands I have ever sat it. Back to the hunt. We arrive at the property and he shows me the tree and off I go. I am strapped in and ready to go at about 6:40 and just waiting for daylight. We sit till 11 and I do not see a single deer all morning. He sees a small 6 point and a couple does. We head out for lunch and to decide what to do next. We were going to go to a different property but he changes his mind at the last minute and go back to the same property we hunted in the morning. He puts me in a different tree and off I go. Settled in about 3 pm. He text messages me about 5:15 pm and aske if I see anything. I tell him NOTHING. About 15 minutes later I hear something behind me and here comes a deer, a buck. I grab the bow but see he is just a little 4-point. He comes in on the downwind side and starts veering away from me. I decide to play with him alittle and grab the buck roar and hit a few soft grunts. He turns and comes right into me and at 12 yards makes a scrape. It was really funny because he was trying to reach the licking branch but couldn't. He was almost jumping on his hind legs. He then walks by me at 9 yds and heads out to the field. I am thinking that this is pretty cool. I text mu "guide" and tell him what I saw and he is glad that I saw a deer after he has been telling me how many he has out there. I watch him out in the field for a while and then loose sight of him. About 10 minutes later I here footsteps again. I turn to where I first saw the four point and here comes another buck, a nice buck. I grab the bow quick and turn around. He is moving quick but stops, I think he was smelling the spot where the 4-pointer just walked through moments earlier. He is at the last spot where I have a shot and quartering slightly away from me. I figure he is at 30 yards but turns out it was only 22. I release the arrow and whap, he drops right there. I hit him high and spined him. I quickly grab the phone and text my buddy "Holy (words I cant use on here) BBD. So now I am watching him and trying to find a spot to slip another arrow but don't have a shot. Now my phone is buzzing and I answer it and tell him what just happened. I know he thinks I just shot the four point. He would have killed me. He says shoot him again and I explain I have to get down, so he says "well get down and shoot him and I will be right over". So I get down and by now he has dragged himself into this real thick underbrush but I find one hole and finish him off. I drag him over to a clearing and sit down and relish the moment. He is definately a mature deer with 8 points, a 15 inch spread and tipped the scale at 182 lbs. He is the biggest NY deer I have ever shot (antlers) with the bow. My friend finally shows up and walks up to him and starts screaming, "that is curly cue. I have about trail cam pics of him" After lots of high fives and some hugs we head back to his house and get the deer cart, we finally get him back home, exhausted. Here are some pics ............ To top it off, Johnny who I traveled out there with, shoots a nice 7 point on a different piece of property. Here are the two of us........... The pics aren't the best. Hope you enjoy. Guest SoutherntierArcher
Well, now I was the "guide" After a hiatous from this site, I tried to get back on and couldn't remember my pass word or my user name, so now I am back as SoutherntierArcher. I have to say first off what a memory with Jim. There is so much more to this story. The buck that Jimmy harvested I had nicknamed Curly Cue and had several Wildview pictured of him before the season began. He was one of seven bucks I had targeted as 3 1/2 years or older and would be a shooter. The property is 172 acres and I am the only non family member which has permission to hunt there. This is the second year I have been privileged to hunt the property and believe me it is indeed a privilege to have the access I do to be there. There are only 3 family members hunting there beside myself and they are predominately gun hunters. After observing 27 different bucks on the property last season ages 1 1/2 - 5 1/2 I decided that PDM would be the way to go here. Personal Deer Management. There are many bucks and lots of does so the goal for the '07 season was no buck younger than 3 1/2 and shoot as many does as would be allowed by the good ole state of NY with a few guests I would bring if permitted and the doe tags I would have myself. Some may say that's some strange QDM practices, but I do not have total contol of the property and I truly feel that 3 1/2 years old and not antler score is the realistic goal which could be achieved here. Jimmy came through with flying colors and followed through on my hopes for the property. He was one of 2 which I brought along with me to hunt there and was the only hunter to bag a buck on the property. The family members harvested a few does and I stuck to my guns and held out the entire bow season and ensuing gun seasons for the elusive 3 1/2 + year olds. This is the first season since 1994 that I did not harvest a buck during the entire NY hunting season. I new in August when I committed to taking a 3 1/2 year old or better I may have buck tags left over, but at this stage of hunting form at least it wasn't about getting a buck. Total count for different bucks observed on the property this season is 26 including a monster that will be 6 1/2 years old next year. I nicknamed him "Chance" because of a chance encounter and 6 trail cam photos of him during the season. I can't wait until next season. It should be a great one! Guest SoutherntierArcher
I named him Curly Que, because the tips of his main beams curled up a little on each side.
