Bow season disappointment turns to rifle season success

What a year!! I could not see a big deer in bow season to save my life until this past week. I saw one 130"+ buck and one 120" buck all bow season until about 4 days ago. Then I was bombarded by big deer. I missed a 125-130" 10 pt on thursday morning. I went back to the same stand friday morning (day before rifle season) and I had a 140" 10 pt at 40 yards and he winded me. Then at 9:50am I had a tall racked 130" 8pt come in at thirty yards and I shot him. Thought I made a good hit (I knew I didnt have great penetration) but I came back after an hour and searched for 1.5 hrs before I found my arrow. I hit him in the front shoulder, the arrow went in about 3" and stopped. There wasn't a speck of blood on the arrow or anywhere on the ground. So I lost him. After that I was so defeated you could have knocked me over with a feather. But....

I went out this morning for the rifle opener. I shot this buck right at daylight. He was chasing a doe. I saw 3 shooters and one other buck that looked pretty nice by 6:30 this morning!!!. So a tumultuos bow season turned into a short but sweet rifle season.:) Not the biggest rack but he was at least a 4yr old maybe 5.

Check out the white blotches on the right side of his face. Kinda weird.

Hey Tim thats a good looking mature deer, I would have shot him too. That sucks about loosing one bowhunting. I know how you feel. Last Sunday was my first bowhunt all year. At about a quarter till five I spot a big buck coming 40 yards down the edge of the field right at me. I new he was a shooter so i pulled back he stopped broadside at 20 yards and i let her fly. His back legs kicked straight up in the air and he ran off quickly to the north. This all happened in about 30 seconds. After waiting about 30 minutes I got down and checked my arrow. There was blood on the vanes but not much on the shaft. I called Derrick and had him brings some lights. Well after 4 hours we ran out of blood after about 400 yards. I came back the next morning for 6 hours and only found a few more yards of blood but no deer. I was pretty down about it. But I think he might still be alive because I saw a deer at 100 yards about the same size at first light opening morning that was limping but getting around good. I could have and kinda wish had shot him now, probably the biggest thing I will see this gun season. Hes a least a nine probably a 130 class. Oh well, im hoping i can get a picture of him on my game camera. Just wish this weather would cool back down. Later, Darrin
