98chevy
I had a decsion to make saturday night. To me it was a no brainer. To others I did the wrong thing. Im wondering what yall would of done. A small doe (no spots) came into my field of view at about 75 yards. Right As it came out I knew something was wrong. As it very slowly got closer I noticed something was bad wrong. The back right leg was tucked all the way up in it. The other held its weight but drug more then stepped. I watched for 20 mintues and finally when it tried to get over this small log and coudnt I drew back and shot it in the spine which dropped it. I then did a follow up shot right below the head. It died instanly after that. The others said I should of let it walk since it was little. I say I took it out of its missery and it should taste good. What do yall think. birdhunter39
i feel you made the right choice , to take out the weak , sick , crippled , it would of died by coyote , or any other type of predator , or just dying from the pain

98chevy
Least someone agrees. I know a wildlife biolgist who prafers you shoot the little deer at his property. Reason 1.He has no money invested in them 2.His ruts alot harder 3.His deer averge weight went up 14l.b.s 4.His new fawns where more healthy and grew faster. LifeNRA
Sooner or later something would have killed it! What you did was just take it out of its misery sooner!

Turkeygirl
You definitely did the right thing. Doing something like that I think makes you a better hunter. Good job.
Shawn
you know what everyone always thinks because a deer is injured it needs to be put out of its misery. i think its what alot of people like to think. People have shot deer that have had broken legs, missing legs etc. but they have lived on. Just because a deer is injured doesnt mean it needs to be put out of its misery. yea if its a buck it does stunt his antler on the opposite side. but they are a strong animal. BowJoe
You won't get pounced on by me Shawn but I strongly disagree. I have seen deer survive a lot of wounds that should have killed them but they have a tough row to hoe depending on the area in which they live. I think each situation is unique but for the most part, young deer like this won't make it for long either by coyote or winter kill. If this animal couldn't get over a log then it can't get to food or water efficiently enough to survive. Bucks have died by getting caught in vines and roots and they are among the strongest deer in the woods. Sympathy or not, he made the right decision. Taking the weak is nature's way and I think we should try to help it along whenever possible or needed.
The Kid
i think you did the right thing. i don't shoot does or FAWNS because i really don't need the meat i have 4 other hunters in my family so usually someone gets a buck. but if i had a deer that obviously wasn't gonna make it i would shoot it, i think as long as you didn't waste the meat, which i doubt that you did, i think its alright. Missilelock
I probably would have shot it too but gotta wonder what was wrong with it & if it was really fit to eat??? Maybe turned it in to game commission & got issued a new tag.
98chevy
No tags heer. We can kill 3 bucks all year and 2 does a day. I checked the legs very thourly and did not see any sine of infection or anything like that. My guess is it got hung up in a cattle fence or got hit by a car even though I was a few miles from a back dirt road. Im not sure if it would of gone that far. Griz
Yeah! I say you did the right thing. I had a fawn one time come in on me that had a broke leg. It would take a few steps and then lay down. I felt so bad for it, so I took it out. I hate to see any type of animal suffer. So yeah, Thumbs up to you for doing the right thing IMO... PotashRLS
All other things go out the window when faced with dispatching a badly wounded critter. Thats how you know you are sportsman first and hunter second. Nice Job! You did the right thing - No Matter What!
