I saw them!!

Oh man, I saw some birds tonight, in fact I'm almost positive it's the flock that crosses the gravel pit that I can't seem to get on, I only know because of their tracks. Well I go out about 2:30pm, check the corn field I think they cross to. What do ya know they are about 100 yards down the field in the corner where I shot my spring bird. I give like 2 yelps but they act kind of spooky and keep feeding. So I sneak back around the corner and down the back edge of the pines seperating the gravel pit/field from the corn field. I sneak into a corner down below where I think they may come. Lots of old and new scratchings in there. I wait and wait. Never see thing, not sure if I heard them fly up or not. What do you think happened? Could they have seen me through the trees sneaking along the field? I hope they'll be back..I think they'll be back.

I left the woods near dark, walked along the sandy gravel pit bath and I found their tracks headed where they always head towards where I think the cross into the other field ...one set appeared to be yesterday's or the day before and the other set I'm almost sure was today's.

Got any tips guys? How would you hunt these birds? Just sit all day by that corn field?

They could have seen you sneaking along the edge. If they did, it depends on how spooked they got whether or not they will be back. My buddy and I had that happen last fall and we swithed to some different birds for a few days because we knew that the birds that spotted us would change up their patterns for a few days.

I would try to figure out where the birds are roosting, and if possible set up very close to the trees they roost in. Also, it would help if you knew where the birds were coming from to go to roost. If you know this.. set up by the roost area and make sure that you have a shot to where they are going to come from and you should get a shot. Used this tactic last year and had the most amazing experience.. about 40 birds flew up and literally were roosting in the trees my buddy and I were sitting against. We almost got shots, but it just didn't work out, they flew up from too far away. It was still an awesome experience.

Hope this helps and good luck!! I'll be hitting the woods for fall turkey around Dec. 15.

Never underestimate how great they see and here. If you were on the same plain as the birds just in the woods, they most likely saw you. You almost have to be below there field of vision. If you can back away and down into a ravine or lowground you would be ok. Still must be very quiet though. Good hunting, dan
