Not legal to shine to locate deer here in Tennessee either, but I do have a spotlight that I keep charged up for other purposes around the farm here, primarily checking on our cows. Think it is an optronic 2 million candlepower. Pretty sure I read somewhere that suggested not to hold the light on continuosly for extended periods of time.

We can't spot in Maine right now, but can start again a little after deer season ends.

We use a Brinkmann QBeam 2 million candlepower spot light and have had good luck with it. I put it on the wall outlet charger for the day and by night time it is ready to go. It also comes with a cord to power it with your vehicle's cigarette lighter, but we have never had to use it (unless I totally forgot to charge it at home  ). There is plenty of power from one charge to use it for the entire week. I picked it up at either Dick's or Walmart and I'm pretty sure I didn't pay more than $50 for it.

As it has already been suggested, don't leave it on constantly. Aside from getting too hot, it will run the battery down fast.

You might want to try a new battery for the light you already have, could just be too old to hold a charge for long. And if money isn't an issue check out SureFire's flashlights. They are expensive, but incredibly powerful and small. I bought their G3 flashlight and almost blinded myself with it.
