How much is enough?

So my dad and I are looking to purchase some acreage here in the near future and was wondering what some of you would look for when buying land and how many acres do you think is enough to hold a solid amount of deer. i already plan on putting some food plots in and a water hole if necessary. Let me know what you think

Do you think there is minimum? or would you say that depends on the surrounding land?

We have 60 acres and sole rights to the adjacent 35 acres and I will tell you it is simply not enough without the cooperation of the hunters on the neighboring properties.

We had at one time had what I thought was a clear understanding with the leasee of the 400 some odd acre farm behind us, but they did not hold up to what he agreed to with me, and the deer we were passing up were getting whacked just off our property on many occasions right after we watched them walk off. Think it really depends on what you have around you, if there is unhuntable thick cover around, would obviously not need as much land of your own.

I would say it all depends on what you plan on doing. I hunt on 227 acres, but share it with about 5/6 other hunters from the family,a nd it does get crowded and over pressured. We are looking at 40 more acres in the middle of timber to maybe take some pressure off our big farm. It's hard to say. As for holding deer, i think i read you would need 2000-3000 acres to absolutely manage your deer herd without an outside pressure. Goes to show, the bigger the better for management...

Welcome to the forums. Dont think you can have too much land, sure wish we had more. Would get as much land as you can afford.

I agree, the more land the better.30 ,40 or50acres of good ground is enough for a couple of guys to hunt and be succesful on.The properties i hunt on are 20 and 80 acres.Smaller properies won't hold deer though, and make it nearly impossible to have much herd management.Even with food, water, and cover they will still travel to the neighbors.

A buddy and myself will be looking to go in together and get around 100 acres hopefully in the next five years.
