Turkeygirl
Last night I was not expecting to bring home a wild Thanksgiving turkey! It's been like 4 years since our last wild Thanksgiving turkey...all i can say is it was the Lord's blessing! So I get home around 2:30pm from college, grab a snack, grab my gear and head out. I have to cut across a couple fields to get to where I wanted hunt. It was raining so my plan was to watch the fields. What do you know...I see the flock of about 11-12 birds, a few adults, mostly youngins, I think same poults I saw as babies in the spring, working there way down the field towards the old gravel pit! I run back and cut across thefield behind a hill then sneak up to the hill where I was thinking there were crossing. They are still below in the other field, heading towards a different patch of woods. So I run into the woods, around the bottom of the old gravel pit and sit down in these hemlocks where I thought they'd come through. Then I thought I wonder if they are going to cross where I was seeing their tracks before. I wait awhile and nothing so I head out into the field, only to see 2 birds fly off the hill where I'd been before! Arrgh! So I decided to go into where I'd seen one fly into, didn't see it in any trees but sat down. I was discouraged but decided to do some kee keeing and yelping. A little bit later I get a response from the top of the ridge. I move up about 15 yards closer to this old trail, seeing tons of poop on the leaves...so this is where they roost, ah ha! I sit down and it responds to my yelping and it getting closer. I've got my gun up. It's close, but I can't see it! A beech tree is blocking part of my view then I've got like foot tall saplings with leaves blocking me. I catch a glimse of the bird maybe 10 yards from me then, on the trail and goes behind the tree! I wait for him to step out...he's yelping and you can hear the start of a gobble in his yelp. It sounds like he's going up the hill so I have to do something. With wet quiet leaves and a tree in front of me, I stand up, lean around awkwardly, put the sight on the bird and BOOM! Down he goes!! Woohoo! I think I cried a little I was so happy! Shot up a back leg a little bit, but got some shot in the neck...not a great shot but it did the trick.A "baby gobbler"...gonna be tasty! God has been to good to me this fall;)

Turkeygirl
It tasted wonderful!! I think fall birds have better taste than spring birds because they have all summer to eat andstore fat...but like that is going to stop me from getting a spring gobbler, lol
