bad hit on a deer

I put what I thought was the best shot of my hunting life on a buck the second week of the Ohio season, but never found it. I saw the point of impact and the arrow passed right through and into the ground. I gave it several hours before taking up the trail because I was waiting for my friend to show up to help me with the dragging. We spent the entire day looking and never found it. After the shot it ran about 30 yards stopped and started panting. I figured that was the end of the line so I turned my attention to the spot where he was standing to look for my arrow. After finding it I looked back over to see if he was down yet, but he was gone. I figured that he was just out of sight so I got down quietly and went out the other way to call my buddy and wait. We followed blood for one full mile and then it just stopped. I'll never know what happened to him and it makes me sick, because like I said... I saw the entrance wound and thought that the shot was my best ever.

I made a bad hit on a doe this year, fortunately it hit the artery above the rear quarter and I watched her go about 40 yds., lie down and die within minutes. I felt really bad because I know I am a better shot than that. I'm not sure what happened but I know how I practice and what a perfectionist I can be. Those things happen I guess, like it or not. Don't get too down on yourself. You are a better shot than that too. It's just something that happens in bowhunting. Learn from it and move on. I know you'll do better next time. Let us know...

Hate to hear that, but it happens. Long time ago, when I first started hunting, hit one low and forward and blew the front legs off the deer. I was following the deer in my scope and it stopped, I squeezed on it where it stopped, but think I was still slightly moving forward, which was a terrible mistake that has never happened to me and never will happen to me again. Learned a lesson that day and felt bad over it for quite some time. I did recover the deer, but had to put it down after watching it push itself off through a fence down the hill on its chest, with the front legs being dragged along.
