Hey all,

Some of you guys may know me some may not but im thinking of moving to the US in a few years but I just cant think of a state to settle down in. First of all, my partner is living with me here in Scotland, he's originally from Mississippi but has lived in 3 other states.

I currently work in the aviation industry as a flight dispatcher though i'd consider a career change if I could get a job as a game warden or something good paid like here.

The kinda things I like to do is hunt, fish and I love the outdoors, I would not live a city but near a big town or a city. I love lakes, watersports. I enjoy shopping malls and going out at weeekends for some drinks, gotta have a good nightlife.

I absolutely hate gun crime, as its not very common here, i'd hate to move somewhere where it is heard of. I dont mind guns but I dont want to live in some run down place with no jobs and uneducated people (you get my meaning)

I love warm hot weather, but i dont mind cold winters but i'd like to avoid winters if at all possible and they would have to be dry, not damp because i can tell you, here in Scotland it rains ALOT and we hardly have summers anymore! Its a wonder why I go to Spain for a vacation ha.

I've been to states such as NC, SC, GA, NY, AL and MS I enjoyed these states, im pretty much open minded about where I live as long as im not in a low paid bracket because of the state where the cost of living is mega high like NYC which i'd hate i want to live comfortably. I do enjoy the laid back attitude of the South, but i dont want poverty (which i saw alot of when i was there)

I also quite like the look of, Texas, Arizona, Tennesse, Colorado etc

Somewhere im guaranteed a good quality of life lol

Sorry about the long post guys, i know this is a hunting forum in all, but most of you guys are from America, so who better to ask than yous :D

P.S Does anyone know if I could get a job as a game warden? Is the pay any good? Is $30,000 a good income or barely livable?

Thank you to all

x

From the way you talk you want to live in the southeast. At least that's what i can gather. If you're husband is from the area where you told me you would be hunting, then it's not a bad area at all. Poverty will be found everywhere. That's just part of life.

As far as a game warden job, the pay around here is not good. I think in the 25 to 30,000 range. I would say to be on the upper end of things, your husband and you would need to collectively bring in 80-100,000(others will be able to tell you more).

Sounds about right to me too.

You probably should visit Florida. If warm and hot temps are your thing....we got em. Plus all the best fishing in the world is right here. I love Florida in the spring and summer but really hate it in the winter simply because I love the snow and frigid temps in teh winter. We rarely get that down here.

The hunting is good. No great big bucks like up in Canada. But we have a few here and there. Game warden is a good occupation here also. Plenty of lakes, watersports here. Couple of big cities like Pensacola, Jacksonville, Gainesville and Tallahassee. I would NOT recommend living in south Florida.

Thanks for the input guys, but where can I earn good money being a game warden? I suppose i could train as a dispatcher in the US.

What is the difference between NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, TX?

Also, another thing. Is cost of living depending on which state you go to?

I like the Southern states and midwest but I would like to earn the money so I could keep up with the inflation (cost of living)

My boyfriend would earn around $40,000 per year in his job.

my wife and i live in northern maine.it is great.but you got to like the winters.you should really check into it.the deer are huge, moose are plentyful.and the fishing is top notch.best of all the living here in maine is cheap.I'm a crane operator and make 70,000 and my wife is a tribal clerk for the maliseet indian tribe and makes a low ball 25,000 we have three children 10,5,2.We live a pretty good middle class lifestyle.a couple in amine making 50,000 combined income could do really well.believe me it is beautyful here in maine.

I live just east of Atlanta, Ga and the cost of living is somewhat high by south eastern standards. I'd recommend somewhere like north east Ga or western NC. Warm weather, mild winters, the smoky mountains (if you like that sort of thing) and you're not too far from either Atlanta or Charlotte NC if you need to go to either.

I don't know about NC, but Ga has pretty liberal limits on deer and great turkey hunting.

I don't know what game wardens are paid here, though.

To be honest dont think anywhere in this country you will find "good pay" for game wardens. My opinion they are way underpaid for what they do.

Tennessee is quite warm, but typically we do see a good bit of rain through the year.

Hmm if thats true about the game warden pay then I may need to think of another career. I wonder if I could be a flight dispatcher over there.

My boyfriend has a degree in mechanical engineering. I wonder if a company over there would take him on, he is a US citizen.

Is there a difference in GA, NC, SC, AL and MS cost of living and laws?

Think you will find cost of living and wages to be dependant somewhat on where exactly you go. Think it really varies quite a bit even within one state depending on the region.

My boyfriend has a degree in mechanical engineering.

As a mechanical engineer, surely he could find a job somewhere. From what I have seen in factories, engineers get paid fairly well.

Thats good, I hope we could do well over there since i'd be making a huge commitment, though I do reckon i'd have a better quality of life. Is $70,000 a good wage altogether, that would be the average for both our incomes.

I would think that would really depend on where you end up and on what your other financial obligations are and what your family situation is(kids-how many if any). $70,000 for a family might not be enough if you have a fair sized mortgage and two car notes, but if you are financially free or have small obligations, $70,000 might be a nice income.

lol sounds attractive but no :p

Guys, I really dont know if i could get a job over there as i dont have a university degree only college and highschool qualifications.

Is working in an airport good money, like what I do working of the ramp or check in? Im gonna focus on Southern states inc south east/west and Midwestern.

Anywhere that is nice, clean, not full of crime that I could get a good paying job - good quality of life.

Another thing that bothers me is health insurance, as some of you guys may know that UK has free healthcare which i would prefer i've heard of alot of horror stories regarding friends who moved to CT and had to work 3 jobs because of the cost of living and eventually they had to return to Scotland.

That puts me off.

Sounds like Wisconsin isn't really "your cup of tea". But, I work for the Dept. of Corrections and have great benefits!! I have great health insurance which covers just about everything you can possibly run into. i get an awesome retirement, and with me having 11 years in I get over 6 weeks paid Vacation along with 5 hours of sick leave every pay period. I can take my sick leave that I accumulate and the state will match it hour for hour and I can pay my health insurance from the time I retire (age 53) until Medicare kicks in!! Any questions feel free to send me a PM!

Wow that sounds great! :D

Well, in the UK its normal to get 5 weeks paid vacation time which I would also like in the US, but if not 3 weeks would be excellent.

There are some cities well areas im more focused on that perhaps you guys have info on or have even been to.

I love Charlotte, NC i've flown into there on many occassions and it seems very nice for a southern city and the towns around there look like they could provide me with a very good quality of life.

Other cities/towns/areas im interested in are:

Denver, CO

Columbia, SC

Atlanta, GA

Birmingham, AL

Tupelo-Olive branch, MS

Dallas, TX

These are main areas im interested in :)

You might want to take Denver off your list as the winters can be brutal there. Dallas has historically had one of the higher crime rates and most of the hunting is on private land in Texas. If you are looking for a more arid climate with warmer winters I would suggest Arizona or New Mexico and if not, the southeast and east coast has all the humidity you could want. Airport jobs do pay well and usually have good benefits. Competition is stiff when it comes to the better paying jobs with benefits. I would be doing a lot of computer searches if you are serious about moving. I would recommend my home state of Montana but the winters are harsh, the summers are hot and dry with the air filled with smoke from multiple forest fires and the job market for good jobs (low paying service jobs are plentiful) is tighter than a crabs butt during a hurricane. Other than that, you could not live a more beautiful place than Montana.

Hi there thanks for the response.

Winters in general dont bother me as long as they are not wet. I can handle cold and snow something I was used to here but now with climate change its seldom. Its very damp and horrible winters now, even our summers are....damp and below 70 degrees.

I would prefer not to have a winter but it doesn't really bother me that much, lets just say Denver had really long hot summers, it wouldn't bother me about winter as long as I was guaranteed a long summer. A good paying job is also a bonus :p

I think Arizona may be just too hot with constant heat averaging into the 90s.

I've experianced the Southern summers and loved it, at this stage in winter im really missing the sun lol.

I have a friend from Libby, MT who lives in Glasgow. From what i've heard its a beautiful state.

So to sum up, having a snowy cold winter is much better than the horrible damp ones here, I could live with that but I suppose its where the jobs are unfortunately.

My wife and I live really well on $70,000 per year. We have a nice home, and one car payment. We live in central pennsylvania in a quiet area. I wouldn't give up this area for more money.

Just remember here in the states you don't need alot of money if you stick to this advise.

Never take money you don't have

To buy things you don't need

to impress people you don't like.
