fisherguy
Took these pics today in a creek full of fast water. A bunch of mallards and black ducks forgot to migrate despite the -30 weather. Is the one with the green stripe on its head just a male blackduck? I had never seen blackducks before and there were about 25, but this is the only one with the green on the head. The other, is it just a drake mallard that has some weird colouration(lacks the grey). Thanks for the help. The duck in the center of this pic with the green on its head. The one near the lower right in this pic that looks like a drake mallard, but the whole body is brown. WABS
Re: Help identifying two ducks I took a drake black duck a week or so ago and it had a hint of green on it's head, similar to but to a lesser degree the one in the top picture. Man do those drake mallards look pretty!!! Go see if you can talk 'em into coming down to see me :-)

huntn4bucks
Re: Help identifying two ducks No wonder it's so hard to kill a mallard down here...they're all still in Canada!!! Great looking pics! Those are some beautiful ducks.

fisherguy
Re: Help identifying two ducks Ya i dunno why they are still here. It has been cold for almost two months and this is teh last open water in a pretty large area. I would say in a 400 yard stretch there must be at least 500 ducks, probably more. Most are mallards, but some blackducks, and whatever those two are.
VABuckSlayer
Re: Help identifying two ducks We are going out tomorrow but my buddy did some scouting this morning and didn't see many. We had a pile of Woodies in a month ago and some resident Mallards but the Mallards are obviously still up North! Send them down please! coles
Re: Help identifying two ducks here in town there is a little spring and its not half the size of a swimming pool and there is about 500 ducks in it too. there is also another place with just as many or more across the street from there. it has been no warmer than 10 degrees and down to -30 for about 3 weeks and they are still here.
