Re: please read guys and gals

Point taken billy, good points too. I've just been in the education business for over 15 years and sure I've seen guys like hunter, and I'm sure I've helped a few in my career, but the #1 ingredient in academic success has got to come from within. You can beat a kid, you can send him to places like Sylvan, you can keep him after school, you can put him in remedial programs, and on and on, and if the kid doesn't give a crap, there's not much we as teachers can do. It may sound cruel, but I'm not going to expend a whole heck of a lot of time on one kid who doesn't want to learn, and ignore 24 others who do. That has never made sense to me in all my years of teaching.

Anyway, I'm done with this matter. grin.gif

This brings us to the preverbial question.....Do the needs of the many out-wieght the needs of the one ???

In this case I say YES they do...and have to agree with Tominator on this one...

Re: please read guys and gals

I am afraid that we too often, and too quickly, point a finger at the school system when a person fails to respond to teaching.

A teacher can do just so much with what they have to work with.

Many students are not pre-prepared by their parents before entering the school system. Then, those same parents expect the teachers to diagnose the problems and cure them like some miracle worker.

I have a neighbor who lives across the street from me that never completed high school. Every one of their children quit school before they graduated, and now this woman is home-schooling her granddaughter.

Is there something wrong with this picture?

Mathematics was a very weak spot in my education. But knowing this, I was able to best help my kids, by telling them to get what they needed from their math teachers. I couldn’t help them with their homework when they got stuck in algebra or geometry.

I once had a substitute letter carrier that grew up in this town and graduated high school here. He had been a hotshot on the football team as well as basketball, and came in very well recommended, but he couldn’t read. That poor boy had mail scattered all over town. He was fired before he finished the 90 day probationary period. This was for a temporary auxiliary type position, and he had never taken a postal exam.

Teachers have so many students and duties to perform, I don’t know how the district can maintain the quality of teachers that we have. Teachers have been under-paid, over-worked, and under-appreciated in Arkansas for as long as I can remember.

Teachers, I salute you. Very few people can do what you do. Very few people even want to do what you do. …..popgun

Re: please read guys and gals

Popgun: I sent a PM to tominator about this very thing... this is another one of those societal woes that America has developed over the past decade... No one is responsible for themselves... it is everyone elses responsibility.

As a nurse... when a patient comes in telling me they can't breathe... wheezing... coughing... and blue... they expect that the medical profession will make them better... what they fail to accept is that for years they have neglected their bodies, smoked and diseased themselves... yet, somehow... I am suppose to make it all better... They (patients) do not want to take responsibility for their own well being...

In the same manner... students, complain decades later how their teachers dropped the ball... when fact is... most didn't put forth the effort needed to alleviate the problem!

My only question w/ Hunter is that he has a very obvious deficiancy... and I would think that some one... some where along the way, would have caught it... unless they did and he didn't make the effort to correct it!

Sometimes Brian, there are some things that we just don't do well.

Even though I sometimes have to read your post and replies more than once, I am learning to read them.

Keep posting and replying.

We will learn to read them.

I'll bet there are some things that you do better than the rest of us.

If I have offended you in the past, I apologize. ....popgun

Re: please read guys and gals

Dont worry about it hunter! Sometimes I type everything into Outlook Express email, then use the spell checker to check my mistakes! It has actually helped me to be a better speller!

I think the parents have just the same if not more to do with a kid in school. My wife and I did so much with our daughters learning. Her K4 teacher told us that she should be in either K5 maybe 1st grade. She has always been ahead in her classes.

Re: please read guys and gals

You know, I'm probibly one of the worst spellers in the world, so I'm not too hard on that one. But, I do think that we all should make the effort to read our post befor submitting. I almost always do, not so much for spelling (I probibly wouldn't catch the mistakes anyway) but for content and just to make sure that it makes sence.

As for the educations aspect: Pobgun thanks for the support.

As 12th year teacher in Arkansas I've taught in 3 different places; redneck america (West Central AR where it is 98% white, NE TX 65% White, 35% Black, and South East AR 85% Black.

This is what I see with education. In all three places there are students who do not want to learn. You can not make them. Many students see education as a waste of time and effort. They plan on working at "The Plant" when they get out of school, so why does it matter if they "don't talk good". Or they know if they have enough babies before they apply for welfare they'll draw a good check.

I have many students who's mothers "draw a check" These women in most cases have 4-6 kids or more, all from different dads and many don't even know who the fathers are. Most of them are also quite a bit younger than me (36) and have grandchildren. These people belive it is thier right to live off the system and not work and they are teaching thier kids this too.

Why get an education if Uncle Sam is going to give you food stamps, pay your rent, utilities and give you $151 per kid untill you can fend for yourself.

It won't make you rich, but it'll keep you in crack for the month.

But I'm not cynical. smirk.gif

This cracks me up. You are trashing him because he can not spell? You do not even put 2 spaces after your punctuation marks! And I don't know any teacher that would approve of anyone using this(.....) to jion 5 or 6 sentences.

so don't be nitpicking about stupid, trivial items.

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't be nitpicking? Jion? so or So? (.....) is actually ..., known as an ellipsis. It is an "approved" punctuation used as a means of omitting words or thoughts. Therefore, preventing run-on sentences.

Thanks for the "heads up" though on "proper grammar" confused.gif

BTW: Can not, should be written as one word, 2, 5, and 6, should all be written as numbers and not displayed as figures, and please start the first word of your sentences with a capital letter. Also, I am quite certain that the forum does not recognize the two spaces between a period (I reviewed several of my posts to see if the multiple spaces were displayed, and they were not.)

FYI: I was not "trashing" Brian shocked.gif, I was only encouraging him to make an attempt to improve his grammar skills. Had you read the first line of my post, you would have been able to gather that helpful bit of information! Our ability to effectively communicate is hardly a trivial matter. I think almost everyone here would say that their ability to write speak fluently is necessary... isn't that why reading, writing, and arithmetic are essential parts of our education? mad.gifconfused.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

If you want this thread to go away or die a slow death, you have to quit responding to it.

Each time you reply, it brings it back to the top, and you have replied to your own thread 11 times.

Oops, I guess I just brought it back to the top again.

Sorry. smile.gif .....popgun
