TOWN OF SAXEVILLE, Wis. — A grandfather fatally shot his 18-year-old grandson in northwestern Waushara County during the opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun deer-hunting season, a warden says.

David R. Ruck from the Saxeville area died at a Neenah hospital after he was shot Sunday morning, Sheriff David R. Peterson said.

"My heart goes out to the family and to the community," said Tim Lawhern, conservation warden and state director of the Hunter Education Administration.

Deputies responded to a report about 8:40 a.m. that a hunter had been shot on private property in the town of Saxeville.

Ruck had been shot in the upper leg and inner groin, Peterson said, adding that the shooter said he mistook Ruck for a deer.

The sheriff's department and state Department of Natural Resources were investigating.

The gun deer season opened Saturday, with an estimated 630,000 hunters participating.

No statewide deer kill figures were reported Sunday.

I Agree!

oh my, I feel for the Grandpa but dang. I still don't see how you mistake a person for a deer.

I have never been able to see how you can either!

Years ago, I had to help haul out a hunter who had been shot by another one! He survived!

A few years after that, I helped haul out a body! The boy was about 15 or 16 and he had been shot by his uncle!

Horrible!!!

There's simply no excuse for this....none. How do you mistake a PERSON for a deer?????? Are they not required to wear blaze orange in Wisconsin? Are you that hard up for a deer that you blast away at the slightest bit of movement in the bushes?????? WHAT?

Stuff like this really bothers me cause it's SO STUPID and SENSELESS!!!!!!!!!!

Blaze orange or not, there is simply NO EXCUSE! Know your target and be certain without any doubt it is what you intend to kill, know what is beyond your target. If people would just follow those two rules that are beat into our heads from the time we start learning to handle firearms these accidents or cases of negligence would not be happening. Really is a shame, but we hear these stories every year, cannot imagine the feeling that grandfather is feeling knowing his act of stupidity has taken his grandsons life.

Wisconsin law requires that %50 of your upper body (i believe, i dont gun hunt for deer so i could be wrong) be blaze orange. Now how many folks follow this rule, especially on private land is another story. The part that blows my mind is that he KNEW other people were hunting near him and still was that careless!! I cant even begin to try and figure out what that guy was thinking....

i've guided literally thousands of hunters over the years. it always surprised me just how many were willing to "chance" it for a good deer. dozens of times, a good buck is standing on a ridge, and the hunter told me he's take a chance on it. i told him that the poor guy on the other side of the ridge is who's taking the "chance". and we never shot. never. even if the next person was likely to be 10 miles away. chances lead to accidents sooner or later.

i'll bet grandpa heard a noise, and knew no one was around him, and took a chance. well, his grandson paid the price. prayers said for the poor kid. as for grandpa, my heart is a little cold for him. he's the one who shoud have known better.

Orange or NOT!

Here in Idaho, you DO NOT have to wear any orange!

I still want to know how anyone can mistake a person for a deer even if that person is in FULL CAMO?:confused:

I think they are shooting at movement and that is all or they are shooting at something that is moving and don't look as to what it is!:(

As for that young boy that I helped haul out, his uncle did everything right and waited until the deer had gone past him and he was shooting away from where his nephew would be coming out! The problem was that his nephew has missed the opening where his uncle was and was over 150 yards from his uncle! Now get this, the bullet went through the deer and then went another 80 yards through brush so thick you couldn't walk through it! This was from a 30-30 Winchester rifle!

The bullet struck the young man in his side and went right into his heart! All his uncle heard was one scream! He went there immediately and his nephew died in his arms!

This past weekend was the opening of gun season in new york. I hunted a spot that i have hunted for over 30 years, and wear blaze orange from head to toe. I saw and spoke with 4 people that had never been in those woods before, (how they got permission to be there is another story) everyone was in cammo. From the grandfather, uncle, son, grandson. I know blaze orange is not the only answer, but it helps...the grandson sitting on the edgs of a swap and an orange hat, grandpa was sitting in a rock formation, I walked 50 yards infront of him before he moves and wave his orange hat at me..I have been a big fan of blaze orange, but a bigger believer of being safe in the woods and the most important and only safety on the gun is the shooter not the mechanical one on the gun..be safe out there have a good hunting season. My heart goes out to the family of the young man who has left us..

These are my thoughts. People just lose their heads over stupid deer. Exactly why I really don't care for gun season around my house.

A very sad situation, but easily avoidable.

Something that was engrained in my head a long time ago...

The 5 FAR's for Weapons.

1- Treat every weapon you touch as if it were loaded. Check and clear first.

2- Be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Bullets don't obey stop signs.

3- Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to kill. Bullets don't know friend or foe.

4- Never put you finger on the trigger until you are ready to engage your target. Mechanical systems fail.

5- Know the location and disposition of your weapon at all times. Unloaded and unattended weapons kill.

A little off topic I know, but everyone needs to be reminded every now and again.

i wear a blaze orange hat and vest , i dropped a hunting partner and he is my best friend for practicing horrible sportsmanship , his father was a hunter and his brother was a hunter , and i told my new hunting partner ( my sister ) if she started messing up that she was done hunting with me . i went to a hunt club the first one ever that i went to , i had a chance at a nice rooster but didn"t take the shot because in the corner of my eye i seen that the dog was about to jump at the bird and the dog did , the guide couldn"t thank me enough , i never hunted with a dog b4 and that was my first time with a dog , and he was shocked to hear that , like i said earlier lets all be safe and have a great not grave hunting season
