pointing_dogs_rule
Hi Guys! Had an opportunity to go on a bird hunt to Winner, South Dakota two weeks ago. The trip was sponsored by a drug company and it was free so I took advantage. I have heard a lot about the birds in that area. First day we (20 guys) hunted standing crop fields. 60 birds taken. My dogs did not work well as my pointers do not do well in tall standing crops. The second day we hunted open grasslands and the dogs did very well. I ended up shooting 2 pheasants and the only Prairie chicken of the hunt. I enjoy working the dogs more then shooting the birds. The birds were wild and were tough to hit at times. Hunting with 20 guys was different from my usual hunting alone or with one buddy. I would not pay the 250 - 300 dollars a day to hunt out there, however, it was different and I saw more birds in one day then I see in Iowa in one season. I must say the drug company put on a first class trip with the food and the birds and I met some really nice people. By the way, I was out in my deer stand behind my house last Sat. and at 4 PM 24 pheasants flew out of my switchgrass stand and landed across the narrow valley. About 15 were roosters. Looks as though that field needs to be cleaned out. Good luck to all the dog
MUDRUNNER
Sounds like a great trip!I went outside of Mitchell for about 10 years straight, but missed the last two years. The number of birds out there are unbelievable. We use labs more as flushing dogs and for retrieving downed birds.
