ETexBow
Heading to Parkersburg WV on Buisness for two weeks. I am bringing my Bow with me and I would like to do some hunting in Ohio. I am thinking about the Athens area. Any advice on public hunting areas?
Tominator
Good luck. Ohio's gun season kicks off Monday, and most public land will be like a war zone. Lots-O-lead flying. It's legal to bowhunt, but you have to wear hunter orange. Here's a list of maps for most of Ohio's public land. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/wild_resourcessubhomepage/WildlifeAreaMapsRepository/tabid/10579/Default.aspx
ETexBow
Thanks Tominator. Im going to try and go this Sunday. Probably my best chance. Then I will probably go back after the 2nd when rifle season closes. Hows the rut coming along? Anymore advice on public lands would be appreciated. Do any of yall have any experience with public land near Athens?
Tominator
This Sunday, you will probably run into guys scouting and sighting in their shotguns. No rifles allowed in Ohio. You are allowed to use a ML though. Deer will be pretty spooky or totally nocturnal by the end of gun season. We usually give the woods a rest for a week or so after gun season. The rut for the most part is probably over. Buddy Ohiobucks saw some cruising and following last week, but I haven't seen anything in quite some time. The Wayne National Forest comes very close to Athens. Some good hunting is near a little town called Nelsonville near there. I imagine there's some maps of The Wayne online somewhere if you Google it, but personally, I don't have any experience hunting The Wayne. Sorry to sound like such a pessimist, and I'm sure there are some Ohio hunters who would disagree with me, but Ohio is a different animal when it comes to gun hunting. Lots of folks out there when it comes to gun season, especially on public ground. Good luck.
Guest bigalt78
yes i had a buddy that went to college in nelsonville and i use to go up there and stay with him and hunt. me and him and this little pocket of park property way back in a corner of some private property and no one really knew about it being there and it was good hunting. its awesome country there. i would say go a little east of nelsonville by zaleski state park im pretty sure it was east. but hope this helps cya

Nut
I would go to Waterloo wildlife area which adjoins Zaleski State Forest. Go either north of the Maintenance Building or go close to the Firetower area. There is Trimble Wildlife also and Wayne.
ETexBow
Thanks for the info guys. Hopefully work will not consume all of my time and I will be able to give the Ohio deer woods a shot. Nut, I read about Waterloo, I think I will give it a shot.
