LifeNRA
My father and I were out checking our rifles for Monday. I shot my 270 first, ok group, but I could do better! Grabbed the 30-30 next, 3-5 inches to the right, and about 3-5 inch group! Never shot anything like that before! Picked up the 270 again. Three shots the size of a nickle in the bull at 100 yards, big grin on my face knowing that the 270 is still shooting great! By this time I moved the 30-30's scope over 4 inches to the left. New target I fire another three shot group. Now remember, two shots were right, one left. This time two shots were left and one right! In-line with the bull, but on each side of the bull! I grab three more shells, pick another target. Again! Two shots right and one left! It sounds like the vertical cross hair is moving! This is the only thing I can come up with! It driving me nuts! I fired 9 shots total, and with the way they were fired. The POI is alternating with each pull of the trigger! Has anybody else ever experience this? wtnhunt
The POI is alternating with each pull of the trigger! What it kind of sounds like John. I am assuming everything is tight? What scope is it? Possible the reticles are loose inside maybe?
LifeNRA
LOL, I have had this gun and scope since I was 13 years old! 31 years! The scope is a Bushnell Sportview, not an expensive one, but it served its purpose. I was using this gun as a back up for the rifle season. But everything is locked down and secure. It just struck me funny as to how the POI were moving back and forth. Guess Ill have to look into a new scope for it next year. Its shame too, that gun and scope could keep quarter size groups at a 100 yards! Not bad for a lever action rifle.
Leo
The rings may be tight and they are tight to the bases but you may still indeed have a mounting problem. If just one of the screws holding the base to the receiver has come loose or sheared it will cause exactly what you are describing. You usually cannot access to check all of those screws without taking the rings off. So if you haven't done that, don't call it quits for that scope yet. LifeNRA
Thanks Leo, haven't thought about the base screws. Ill play with it after the season is over.
Shaun_300
Had the same problem with my .300 WSM before deer season, turned out to be loose scope mounts. Except mine would be ok side to side, it'd just shoot all over the place, high of the bullseye. Eventually it was shooting about 3 feet high, knew something had to be wrong, turned out the back scope mount was euchered, it had sheared off and worked its way up and was sitting on top of the base. I'd be checking your rings and bases, make sure their tight, if they are it must be the scope.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Make sure you aren't doing something wrong with your shooting form, like resting the barrel directly on a sandbag, putting your off hand on top of the barrel, etc. Also try to shoot 3 shots from the bench without moving your feet or your butt. Those are your "anchor points" and if they move, it can cause your groups to open up. And lastly, when was the last time you really cleaned the bore? I mean to the point where it was spotless. Any of these could be your problem.

Just going to wait until after deer season is over to get into it right now! I shot the 270 great too! Three shot group in the bull about the size of a nickle at 100 yards! Pretty sure its something wrong either with the base, rings, or scope. But thanks for all the suggestions! When I get to it Ill let you all know what it was!
