Rem308
A friend of mine has recently mentioned he'd like to sell his muzzleloader and I've been interested in getting into muzzleloading for some time now. It is a CVA Magbolt .50 caliber. He said everything is working fine, no problems to speak of. I'm interested on what others take is on this gun and how it would suit me for a first muzzleloader. To be honest I like the idea of this one because it's very affordable. He had a scope on it, however he's taking the scope off. Please give me your $.02 on this muzzleloader. Thanks folks. -Rem308
Guest Ironhorse
I've got a Magbolt 150 in .45. It came with a Bushnell scope and a cleaning kit. It seems like it went for about $225 5 or 6 years ago. It's the only ML I've ever owned, so I don't have a lot to compare it to. I do like it. As long as you seat the bullets all the way and keep it clean, it shoots fine. When I'm done shooting the Pyrodex that I have I think I'm going to try Jim Shockey's stuff because they are a bear to clean. There are two things I don't like about it: the safety is unlike any other gun I have in that you pull it towards you to take it off. With the long barrel it is a little tough to carry on a sling because it alwyas wants to slide backwards. I put some weight in the hollow part of the pistol grip to offest some of this. I also put a Limsaver pad on it. Not that it kicked real bad, but I don't like recoil if I can avoid it. My ML is really just insurance in case I don't take a buck during rifle season and for that job, I would reccomend a CVA.

Rem308
Good deal...glad to hear the information. Anyone have any recommendations on the bullet & powder combinations for this .50 cal? The guy who is selling it tells me he uses 2 pyrodex 50 grain pellets and 1 of those blackbelt sabots. He said it was grouping really well with this load, so I'm sure I"ll try this first. Thanks again folks.
wtnhunt
Anyone have any recommendations on the bullet & powder combinations for this .50 cal? Try to work up some different loads with some different sabots and see what works best with the gun you get. For me with my TC black diamond, the TC 240 grain xtp mags give me great performance with 120 grains of loose pyro. Had tried several other bullets and powder charges ranging from 85 grains up to 140. That is what my gun likes, and those xtp's sure do a number on the deer. Have yet to use 777, but the American Pioneer shockeys gold stuff I had terrible performance out of.
Guest vtgrizz2006
the only time we used the american pioneer pwder was around 5 years ago and there was 5 of us in deer camp in pittsburg nh. and it was snowing bad. we hunted all day in the snow and two of us had 777 and three of us and the american pioneer,,,,at the end of the day we decided to shoot all of our guns and clean them...not one of the american pioneer loads went off, both of the 777 went off we all had tape over our barrels too.we unloaded em and the pioneer stuff was mush.i dont know why it got wet but ive used 777 ever since. my friend steve called american pioneer and told them about it and they told him it wasnt made for wet conditions,,,lol dont figure.. tlott89
my dads cva inline magbolt 150 50 cal likes the xtp bullets,120 grains of powder, green sabots and in cold weather i think he uses the 209 primers.ive killed many deer with his ml the first one i shot with it was a doe at 250 yards across a revene and blew its heart apart.we use our ml's up here almost all the time except if its raining really hard or were in a brushy place during a drive when we might need more then one shot then we might get the shotguns out but this yr they passes rifle for here so our ml's havent seen the woods yet but they will in acouple weeks during ml season. good luck
