Rem308
i'm very interested in how this is turning out...I have read a lot about the euro mount, just have never tried it. So up to this point of boiling, I guess you did your best to clean off the flesh and such from the skull? The first boiling is just water, correct? How long did you boil it today? Thanks for sharing, this is going to answer a lot of my questions!
wildside
Check out this detailed info (with pictures) from the Michigan United Conservation Clubs TV program, Michigan Out of Doors. We watch this program every week on our PBS station and actually saw this episode on doing skull mounts. Good luck! http://www.mucc.org/mood/skullmount.php
Hardwood_HD
thanks wildside that should help, Rem i only boiled it for a couple hours maybe, there wasnt too much on the skull since it has been dead for a while buts its all cleaned now and is ready to be whitened

Adjam5
Don't use bleach to whiten it!!! Use 40 volume peroxide, get it at a beauty supply store. Buy the white. Skulls are my fav:)
ccwhitey
I'm also doing a couple of euro mounts. One is a 8 that my dad shot and the other was 2 main frame 8s that got locked up. I'm not boiling them b/c that makes them very brittle. Instead I am using dermested beetles. They eat the all of the meat and leave all of the bone and cartilage intact. Only bad thing is that they really stink.
Hardwood_HD
yea you have to be carful not to boil it too hot or you will make the bone brittle, i tried to keep it at a really low boil and it seemed to work good, i'll have to order some stuff from WASCO now to finish it
shockwave
don`t be afraid to use a little flat white rattle can to finish up a euro mount.. I gave my brother an 8 point I found last year it turned out great after a little touch up..

Eric
I never thought of doing it like that. My friends and I take a 55 gallon steel drum, cut it in half. Flip it around so the bottom is in the middle. Weld it back together. Cut a slot in the side to put firewood underneath. blow a few holes in lower portion with the shotgun to allow more air to escape. This is fun! LOL Fill the top full with water. Rap the horns only in tinfoil(This keeps the horns there natural color. Get something to tie the horns to and drop the head in the water. A piece of rerod works well w/ zipties. Takes about 24 hrs if you keep the fire going good. Would take less if you cut as much hide and meat of face first but we don't bother. The barrell is shot after about one season but we do alot of racks from our group shotgun season and a few friends bring theres over also. I would say about 12-18 racks easy on a average yr. You can do a couple at once if they are smaller basket rackets. Your idea would be perfect for a finish process with bleach or what ever that stuff is that makes skull whiter. Looks like your way will work just fine. Myself my wife would kill me if I used her pot b/c it would be trashed when we are done with it LOL

HUNTINGMAN
I left a big 10 point head hanging in a tree for about six months one time hopeing it would rot and I would have a scull mount. The skin and everything was gone but the rack had gotten weatherd and looked rough,I wish I had known how to do a euro mont then because I ruined a pretty rack and had to just cut off the horns.I had someone tell me that you can bury the skull in the ground for awhile and this would work,is this true or does it not work. Hardwood_HD
some say it works but i wouldnt try it.. i just boil mine, gets it done a lot quicker... heres a pic of it..
Adjam5
That came nice. Boiling and scraping is hard work, but its worth it. Burying it in the ground would work when the ants/bugs are most busy.

HUNTINGMAN
What about the brain matter when doing this,do you remove part of the skull to get it out or what.
Adjam5
Use a hanger or hard wire of some sort and scramble the brains out through the access hole where the spine meets the skull.

sasksheds
Just use a pressure washer & stick it in the back of the skull & blast them out.Trust me after boiling the skull a pressure washer is your best friend! You can clean it up real good & get stuff off out of those little holes & nasal passages.Be careful not to hit the antlers to much. You will wash the color right off.
