DSGB
I killed my first 5 pointer the day after Thanksgiving (Friday 11/23). I've killed spikes, 3 pointers, 4 pointers, 6's, 7's, 8's, and a 9 pointer, but no 5's, until now. I was sitting in a stand we put up where a drainage ditch goes into a deep creek bed. It's one of a few crossing places since it's so steep. The creek is dry right now, of course. About 7:15, I saw a doe coming down parallel to the ditch. She was about half grown and I could see another deer behind her. She passed about 20 yards in front of me followed shortly by her botton buck fawn. 20 minutes later, another doe about the same size comes running in front of me with her tail straight out. I could hear another one coming behind me, so I turned and got ready. I could see it was a buck with a tall rack, but not many points. I stopped him with a "maaaa" and took the shot. He ran straight for the creek and stopped just at the edge and stood there for a second before bolting down into it. A spike came running by me with his nose to the ground bird-dogging the doe. I pulled out my grunt call and blew it a couple times. The spike came back, tongue hanging out like a freshman at a frat party. I messed with him for a minute before he just went the direction the doe had gone. I waited about an hour and went to look for the buck I had shot. I found where he was standing and could only see some hair - no blood. I walked down to the creek and couldn't find any blood there, either. I started down into the creek bed when I saw the first few drops of blood going down the hill. More blood in the creek and more going up the steep hill on the other side. I couldn't believe he made it up that thing! As I got to the top, he was laying about ten yards away. I had hit him a little far back (took out the liver), but he only went 50 yards. I guess once he climbed out of that ravine it jumped on him. This buck looks similar to a couple of six pointers I've taken on this property, but he was missing an eye guard. My uncle who is a game warden aged him at about 3.5 and the guy at the processor said the same. Here's me and the big 5. Here's a picture of the hill he ran up. Still not sure how he made it. wtnhunt
Congratulations. Amazing how well deer scale steep hills like that.
Shaun_300
Congrats! That's a big 5-pointer. Deer can climb some pretty steep hills, dad told me a story once when a deer came climbing up a super steep and long hill right behind him. He was only standing about 10 yards from the top. The deer crested over, saw dad and put the binders on, he put the gun up and shot it right between the eyes and it barrel-rolled all the way back down the hill. :D
