johnf
308 would be good. I think it would have less recoil than a 30-06.

wtnhunt
john, whats the average range that 308's can shoot Not John, but can answer that question. You will be limited with a .308 somewhat to your own limitations. Depending on the game you are after, the .308 is a pretty good intermediate range round, and was at one time for good reason a choice round for snipers. Think a .308 in the hands of an able shooter would be good to 450 or 500 yards on deer sized game possibly even a little beyond. Personally I would never shoot at a deer at a range that far myself though, I am confident to about 250 with my .270 in hunting situations here. Looking at ballistic tables, there are several factory loads with a .308, that you can expect to still be carrying around 1100-1200 ft lbs of energy at 500 yards, which should be more than enough to take down a deer. Beyond that, have not seen any data.

johnf
I use an inexpensive (not cheap) new england/h&r handi rifle. You can get them for around $200 and they are very accurate guns. If your going to spend more I would recomend the Savage with the Accutrigger or a Remington Model 700. Both have been recomended highly on here and those are what most of the guys around here shoot. wtnhunt
Right now with $400 if your wal marts carry rifles, I would check and see if they have any of the remington 700's on clearance. Here they had a few in 30-06 for $325 and $300. The 30-06 would be a good choice as well as a .308, recoil for the .308 would be a little lighter, but a good pad can make up some of the difference for the 30-06. There are several good brands of rifles out there that can give good accuracy out of the box. I like the savage model 10 bolt guns just about as much as the remington 700's, nothing wrong with the browning A-bolts either, but they are going to be a bit out of the $400 price range. If $400 is the max you will be able to spend on the rifle alone, look at the remington 700's and savage model 10's, see which feels best to you. LifeNRA
My choice would be a Browning A-Bolt in .30-06. More bullet choices you can pick from. One gun could be used for varmits to bear. If I had things to all over again this is what I would have bought, instead of the .270. Don't get me wrong I love this gun, But now I would rather have the .30-06. JMHO!

wtnhunt
Gander Mountain and Dicks run some deals on rifles too. Get a weekly ad from Dicks here now, and have seen both savage and remingtons in ads that would probably fit your price range.
toddyboman
Have several remington 700s in the gun safe all are GREAT shooting guns. You will be very happy with one:)
Leo
The 30-06 is probably the better choice though I really like the 308Win and have been quite successful with it. Guns tend to be a little lighter in 308 flavor vs 30-06 flavor, short action vs long action, this translates to virtually identical recoil in both rounds. Surprisingly, the super lite 308s will actually kick MORE than a standard weight long action 30-06. The 308 really only falls very slightly behind the 30-06 in performance and in my experience it's not enough to notice on game performance. The managed recoil rounds for 308 and 30-06 have identical performance. This means the heavier gun kicks less every single time. Super light guns are a joy in the field to carry and miserable at the bench. They also take quite a bit of practice to get consistent with.
