Guest ExtremeSoloDubV
How many mature bucks could an area of 40 acres hold if the land consisted of thick sanctuaries and food plots around & in-between the edges? How many deer in general do you think would hold up in an area of this size? Thanks for the feedback everyone, its great!
wtnhunt
Depends on the area I guess, if there is a transition area where different dominant bucks territory might overlap or meet or if it is a fringe type area. Have read that one dominant buck will work a one square mile area on average outside the rut, during the rut, a buck may end up several miles away from his core area. So I am guessing 40 acres might hold a couple mature bucks before the pre rut while bucks are still in bachelor groups, after that would think you might have some moving in and out of the area, but not real likely there would be more than one dominant buck in that area. PotashRLS
40 acres can be drop in the bucket for a deer. It largely depends on how your 40 blends in with the neighboring parcels. How many sanctuaries, waterholes, large food sources and food plots are there? Are they in close proximity to each other? Hunting pressure? Once the rut gets close, all bets are off. Some 40s have it and some don't. If you have the ideal 40, more mature deer will want to be there. Many human factors will make them not want to be there also. Sometimes you need to take a step back and look at the big picture.
Ravin R10 man
during the summer when in velvet its possible to have several..after they shed and move back to their core areas, all bets are off that even one may stay...now if it were 400 acres..then you could have several share the area if the bucks core area overlaps that parcel..your best plan would be to plant plots and hunt early bow season

Ravin R10 man
I agree with Todd here too..thats why you plant the plots ,to keep does around to attract bucks..that will work
Guest ExtremeSoloDubV
thanks guys, great feedback. We own approximately 400 acres. The only food plots in the entire surrounding areas are on our land. Will this increase the attractiveness of the plots being the only food plots around with the large sanctuary right there?? There are family owned properties that border me for the most part, however about 1000 acres is a public hunting area. This is good and bad. Good because all the deer v-line for our thickets during rifle season and is not tapped in archery season, bad b/c i do not know what is being harvested. I hope to have a minimum 8pt restriction be put in place by the State, how nice would that be? The other portion of our land is an old strip mine, a horse shoe shape bowl, where 64 acres are being select cut starting in January... 16" diameter and up, when this is complete, will begin adding plots to this section...
