AJ
I do like the .260 Remington for a kids first big game rifle. It will do the job for anything from varmints to deer and bear when fed the proper bullets. It is becomming one of the favorite cartridges for high power silhouette shooting as it shoots high BC bullets with enough momentum to knock down the big rams at 500 yards, is a very accurate cartridge, and has low recoil. All that is hard to beat. It is also available in the Model 7 which is great for a small framed kid.
archerjg
Re: Best calibre for kids? I would think that the .243 would be good as there is very little kick. Archerjg

superguide
Re: Best calibre for kids? My boy started shooting a .270 when he was 10 with no problem but he also has a .243. When they start shooting make sure they wear ear protection and give them a gun with a decent trigger pull-it will rewally cut down on flinching. borch
Re: Best calibre for kids? Both my girls shoot 7mm-08(Rem 700 mtn & Model 7) and my son shoots a .308. But the rem .260, ,257 roberts and 7x57 would also be good rounds.

SaskMan
Re: Best calibre for kids? I started with a 7x57, not sure what would be best, I've been wondering what would be best as I'd like to get my wife out with me more, she has her hunter safety. Guest Charlie_in_TX
Re: Best calibre for kids? Alot depends on the target. For arguements sake I will assume deer. For large deer in Maine (and north in general) I would think a 7-08 is the minimum. For small TX hill country deer, a 243 is minimum. Leaser guns will do the job but you defenetly don't wan't a new hunter to be discouraged by loosing a deer. I plan on starting my daughter on my Remington Sendero in 25-06. It is heavy so there is little kick, Plenty of power, and the weight is no issue when hunting from a shooting house.
