Well I have experianced my worst season ever so far. I deer in the first weeks of bow season last year than I have from Oct. 1st to now.

I sure hope Dec. is alot better.

Is anyone else seeing less deer than in years past ?

Sorry to hear about your disapointment, but look at it this way: You could be stuck at work and not able to get to the woods at all. I would rather be in the woods enjoying the real "nature channel" and see no deer than be stuck at work wishin' I was in the woods.

It's like the old bumper sticker, "The worst day in the woods still beats the best day at work."

I'm seeing a lot more deer than normal, but also a lot less bucks, especially mature bucks. I don't think the population is down any, there's just so much feed right now from all of the rains during the Spring and Summer, plus it was unseasonably warm during the rut so most of the chasing activity took place at night. I've seen about 20 - 25 different bucks, but only 2 were mature. One was a 135 - 140 10 point with a broken G4 that I passed on and the other was a 140 8 point that came by chasing a doe but didn't give me a good shot.

Dwin, hate to say it, but I'm seeing more deer this year as well. I know the weather hasn't really cooperated, but the deer kill for this area is almost at a record amount. I'd bet that if it weren't for the 2 buck minimum, we would've beaten the mark easily.

The second weekend of rifle season our local check station usually has checked in around 400-500 deer (includeing archery) this year they had 223.

Our local check station(redland) had more checked in this year, I believe. But the county as a whole was down 30%. Again, weather and the 2 buck limit hurt a little bit.

I've had a blast so far but haven't killed anything with antlers yet. I had one of the best bowhunts I've ever had before in Iowa but I ate my tag waiting on a close encounter with a big one. Our rut down here in MS hasn't really kicked into high gear yet but we're getting close to it now. Looking forward to having a lot more fun before the season is over down here. ;)

maddhunter,

I live close to you and I agree this is the worst deer season I can remember, almost every local hunter I know didn't see very many deer this fall and especially bucks.

On the private land I hunt I've only seen a spike ,forked horn and probably a 2.5 year old buck and maybe 2-3 mature doe's with yearlings.

I have feeders going plus foodplots with some activity but not like in years past,I know the bumper acorn crop had something to do with it.

Three words my father always said to me while deer hunting!

"YOU NEVER KNOW!"

He has always believe in these words, and so do I! Because you never know where or when that deer will show up! Yes, I have seen better years but I seen more deer during archery than the rifle season this year. I shot my buck on the last day of rifle season here in PA. Even though I could have waited for the second archery season. But I have a doe tag for the season to use while hunting more deer with my father! Which is what I am saving it for! ;)

Our county-wide harvest for the first shotgun season was up from last year, but our sightings of good bucks (140"+) has been way down. While hunting, I've only seen one buck that I would think about shooting. We've seen quite a few half-racked bucks and mini-bucks in the past month, but nothing big. I've also only had a few does within range this year. It seems that numbers are down slightly in my hunting area.
