Turkeygirl
So it's late season...most shotgun hunters seem to be done around here..no one else been hunting the property we hunt. I'm trying to decide if I should walk again and look for a buck, or go sit in a stand. It's cold, got almost a foot of snow on the ground so those deer gotta be hungry. I was just walking through our woods looking for that fox and they deer were in heavy this morning. I saw a huge set of tracks that I almost bet is a buck. They usually go back into the big woods in the AM, rarely stick around. So I don't know if I should sit in a stand that's between a corn field and heavy hemlocks or walk around... Uusually this late in the season the deer don't move until dark..but after a week of cold weather and snow I'm wondering if the deer will move? What do you suggest? Turkeygirl
Or I just had an idea...:-) Still hunt these small patches of woods that are really thick and deer will bed in often..then go to that stand in the hemlocks by the corn field..hee hee hee..sounds like a plan
wtnhunt
Might go for a mid morning walk or still hunt Ruth, then take an afternoon sit in a stand at the last hour and a half or so of legal shooting light. Here yesterday, I knew I would have a good chance at seeing some deer if I hunted our back field, but I had heard a scuffle in the woods not far from where I have a stand located just the afternoon before. I did not go with my instinct and let the curiousity get the better of me thinking whatever moved through the day before might do it again and so I sat the stand in the woods yesterday afternoon. Saw nothing, nothing until the walk back, the deer were coming onto the field and I got busted walking out. This evening will be hunting a field, if the wind is right the very same field. QDMAworks4me
I agree with William, I would still hunt for awhile, with all the snow in NY you might be able to get close enough to a deer to shhot one, just make sure the wind is right and then you can sit the last hour or so if you have warm enough clothes. You should be able to tell where the deer are going to be by the tracks in the snow. Or at least have a pretty good guess. Good luck. Guest bigalt78
i know walking around and trying to shoot something isnt a very popular tactic but i've done it plenty of times and i've actually shot my first buck with a bow by walking up on it. i was walking back to the truck pass another stand and corn pile that i had setup and when i walk through the woods i always just hit my grunt just incase something is there that i dont see and they MIGHT think that im a deer and it actually worked when i shot my first buck i walked within twenty five yards of it popped out of the thicket seen and thumped it.
