Guest mrs.bae
I'm looking to buy my husband a handgun for Christmas. He is a police officer/ SWAT Sniper and although he owns several long guns, he only has his dept. issued pistol. He owns none of his own. I have no idea where to start. I work with other LE officers myself and their general concensus was a S&W 686 .357 SS 6" brl - which I found (with a LE discount) for $569.00. Any other suggestions? My husband loves to hunt - ANY AND EVERYTHING!! He loves guns, period. I'm sure he would be happy with anything I got, but I want to make sure I get this right. This will be his first to actually own. Thank y'all for the help!
WNY_Whitetailer
Does your husband hunt whitetail? If so, I would suggest a 44 Mag. There are a ton of guns out there that will do the job on deer but I like the 44. If you want to stick with Smith and Wesson, The Model 629 would be a good option. The one in the pic is a 6 1/2" barreled model. They also offer a 8 3/8" model as well as shorter ones. If I were going to use it strictly for hunting, either of those barrel lengths would be my choice. Of course, there are a ton of other firearms options out there...I just provided you with one. Guest mrs.bae
Yes, he hunts whitetail. He hunts everything, literally! He's obsessive about it. We had to plan our wedding around when he WASN'T going to be gone hunting!! I appreciate your suggestion. I have asked a couple of his good friends and lease buddies, but they all seem to have different opinions.
popgun
Why not just get him on the subject of handguns, and ask him if he was going to buy himself a handgun, which one he would like to have? Then you must listen closely to his answer without acting like you are that interested. You don't want to get him a handgun that doesn't meet his needs or wants. Remember that when you buy it, it must be in your name and not his. If you tell the retailer that you are purchasing the handgun for someone else, you will be refused service. ....popgun
PotashRLS
I am partial to the Ruger Super Red Hawk in the .44 Mag. with a 7 1/2" barrel. It is very accurate and fun to shoot. Otherwise just surprise him with a little shopping spree so he can pick the one he wants and it can be registered in his name right a way. Nothing says lovin like a new handgun:eek:. What a nice wife!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas.
WNY_Whitetailer
I was also going to add that handguns are a very personal thing for most people...He might want to pick out his own. I know that it would ruin the surprise. Maybe a gift certificate for a handgun would work...I know that it isn't the same thing. Then again, I don't know your husband, he might like it if his wife surprises him with a quality handgun... and BTW, you are an awesome wife for doing this...My wife wouldn't even consider something like that...That is why whenever I purchase a handgun, she doesn't know about it and I am not about to tell her. I just don't want to hear about it. Oh, and I am a police officer as well.
Hoosierbuck
The S&W .44 Mag is a great suggestion. Since this is a "fun gun" for him, I think you'd be hard preseed to do better than that, but again, it's a personal thing. You are a good wife that loves her hubby! WaCoyote
Does he want a handgun for hunting or for plinking? I'd go with a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 for hunting and probably look at a Springfield XD High Cap .45 for plinking, self defense etc. Every cop I know wants one of those bad! They seem to ooh and aaah quite a bit over it. LOL! It comes with a bunch of accessories and there's a ton of aftermarket stuff for it. My buddy got one and loves it. Light and reliable, quite the rage right now.If he's more of a traditionalist like me just about any Kimber 1911A1 in would suit me just fine. Those are nice!!! Why wont my wife buy me a gun? Guest mrs.bae
I appreciate all of the comments guys. Since posting my original message I have since done a little more research and asking around. Thanks to WNY-Whitetailer; I think I'm going to go with the S&W 629, .44 w/ a 6 1/2in barrel. The LE friendly dealer in this area has one in stock, and is graciously going to let my husband exhange if he doesn't like it....even if he wants to exchange it for something they have to order!! So, I'm thinking I can't go wrong with this arrangement!! Now, I gotta do some research on new 4-wheeler tires.... Oh, the joys of being a wife!! Thanks for all the help!! WNY_Whitetailer
You're kidding my right? 4 wheeler tires? Your husband's friends must be jealous...Not only are you purchasing a handgun for him but you are also looking in to 4 wheeler tires...Women like you are rare to say the least. Do you have a sister? LOL...Just kidding.
Guest mrs.bae
Ha! I don't think I'm rare...Just like to please my man! Usually everything is reciprocated; he's equally as good to me. I do as a matter of fact, have 3 sisters!! Only one that isn't already married though!
