Dawg
What is your honest opinion about hunting? Is it a sport? I was watching another well known hunting group the other night and they called it a sport. My opinion is, it's not a sport. A sport is football, hockey, basketball, baseball, etc. A sport has a winner and a loser, in my opinion, whether I kill a deer or not, I still went hunting. Afterall, that's why it's called "hunting" not "killing", right?
wtnhunt
Guess it is entirely subject to opinion. Dont think it wrong for someone to consider hunting a sport, after all golf and ping pong are also considered sports and require little more if any more activity. Hunting is an activity, some people hunt for the challenge, which seems sporting.
Dawg
I'm not coming from an activity stand point. I'm talking overall. Everyday life is a challenge, but it's not a sport. Guess I'm just old fashioned. I like to think of hunting as just that.....hunting. It's a God given priviledge. I will say this though, there are some who "make" hunting a sport, but that's a whole nuther cup of tea that I won't stir up.......right now! Bob LeBlanc
I, personally, agree that hunting is not a 'sport'...and I think that promoting it as a 'sport' trivializes it and its worth to the community. If I had to draw any parallel...I would say that hunting is a 'religion'. Modern hunting is meant to be 'sporting'...but that only means that there are rules associated with it. Specifically the rules of 'fair chase' (ethics). Bob
Randy
What is your honest opinion about hunting? A sport has a winner and a loser, in my opinion, whether I kill a deer or not, I still went hunting. You just answered your own question. To a true sportsman, what does it matter if you win or lose, it's all in how "you played the game". Sounds like a sport to me.
Tominator
I guess it depends on your definition of sport. Certainly hunting is a challenging endeavor, so in that sense it's sporting. I just know for certain, NASCAR is not a sport, right Luke?

hutchies
Maybe not but I think Archery in the Schools program is. Good way to give kids that don't fit into traditional sports a way to gain confidence.
Texan_Til_I_Die
I think everyone is confusing the terms "sport" and "competition". One of the definitions of sport is An active pastime; recreation. Hunting certainly fits that.
cinch314
I myself call it one of my hobbies. Roping is considered a sport but yet it is my hobby also. I guess hunting means different things to different people but Im for the recreational aspect of it.
Guest adrenaline_junky
I look at it a little differently than some also. I could consider it a sport cause like you said a sport has a winner and a loser. In my opinion everytime I step in the woods wether or not a fill my tag, I've won. Basically cause I went out no matter what the condition. To be honest with you though in my honest opinion I call it more of a way of life. My way of life is hunting everything (besides family and my ol' lady) evolves around hunting. All in opinion though.

elkoholic
A tough question, perhaps. I think that it all depends on why you hunt. Do you need to hunt to feed the family? Do you hunt to fulfill some primal urge? Do you hunt just for the fun and the challenge? For me, every hunt should be an adventure, a dance between life and death, where some suffering on my part is often an important part of the experience. Sporting? Not to the hunted. If it is a sport, then it is so only to the warped part of our minds that makes it so. It is merely a central part of life and living (a way of life) that those of us who still retain a realistic view of the natural world can enjoy and absorb into our being. Only if you hunt for the entertainment value alone could you possibly think of it as a sport.
buckee
Well said elkoholic I have an aversion to calling hunting a sport also. It bugs me to call it a sport for the same reasons mentioned by others. Hunting isn't a game played with another human being, so how can it be a sport. Killing isn't a sport, it's just the bonus at the end of a fine hunting episode. Hunting to me is life, seen from a different perspective, than most people have. It's a passion, it's an activity, it's a way of life, it is a form of a game that you can never lose. Hunting is something you can do, with or without a weapon, with or without a camera ....you just have to be there, and participate. The prize can be a picture, a full freezer, or just a memory. Hardly a sport in my eyes.
Nut
I do not like to be considered a sportsman because of the hunting and fishing I do. Outdoorsman is a better term for me. So no IMO hunting is not a sport to me.

texastrophies
What is in a name? Does it really matter if it is called a sport or not? Those of us that hunt, which is the majority of the people who will read this, are going to hunt no matter if you call it a sport and us sportsmen, a way of life and us living, or if you call it a job and we are workers, we are going to hunt. Call it what you want, but, Just Do It;) (get it?)

ZooBear
I look at it as more of a right than a sport. Is breathing a sport?
TreeStandBowHunter
Here is how I look at it...no matter how you look at it or try to sugarcoat it, unless you're hunting to survive, it's a sport;). That's my opinion. Now with that, you can call yourself whatever you want, be it Sportsman or whatever. I often call myself a sportsman. But that does not change the fact that hunting is a sport today. There may be a "few" who hunt to survive but I think we can mostly agree that those days are over...for most "sportsmen" anyway. Again, just my opinion.
