Hey guys i know nothing about rifles at all the only one i've ever shot was my 22 and my buddy's 6mm coyote hunting. In ohio we're not allowed rifle hunting but i'm going to be rifle hunting the kentucky season next year and would like to buy a rifle soon. Anyone have any suggestions, I really liked my friends 6mm can that take down a deer. If it's not a good gun for deer let me know what one is please....... thanks guys

10 guys might give you 10 different answers.

The 6mm will work for deer. But I would not rate it high on a list of well-suited calibers for the casual rifle hunter. It's on the small side (IMO) and ammo is not a "walk-in-and-buy" at Wal-Mart.

I'd suggest you pick up a handy little bolt gun in .308 Win. There's nobody that knows guns who'd argue the .308's place in the deer woods. ;)

I would look for one of these http://hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/youth.aspx in a pawn shop or used gun section in 243, 7mm-08, 25-06, 270, 280, 308, or 30-06. (smallest to largest in size and recoil IMO) If you can get one for $175 or less, jump on it. If you can get one for $200 it's still a good deal. You can order them new from a Wal-Mart that still sells guns for about $225. If you don't want to keep it put a cheap little scope on it and sell it when your done. If you like it put a good scope on it and get you ml and ultra slug barrel for it and it'll be good for hunting at home.

I tend to agree with Strut - find a bolt action 308 in Remington/Winchester/Browning/Savage that you like and can afford and it will last you a lifetime for what you might want to do. Can load haevier bullets and hunt up to elk size game if needed and recoil is light and easy to take for someone not into allot of rifle hunting.
