Fawns have no scent (photo)

This is a photo of a bedded mule deer fawn I took while upland bird hunting last fall. If you look close, you will notice my English Setter, Rosy (a.k.a. Notorious D.O.G.), running into the frame from the right along the horizon line. Rosy has her mouth open and her ears back and by all accounts is having a great old time. She hunts with her nose, and she had no clue this deer was bedded there the whole time. Rosy was within 5 yards of this fawn twice, and it just stayed still and let her go right by.

The fawn never did get up. This photo was as close as I got to it. I didn't want to spook it out of its bed because its mama had obviously told it to stay put.

Tominator, it's interesting that you mentioned that. There were at least 4 occasions last year I can think of when Rosy got within 15 yards of bucks and held her point last year (Saskbucks was with me on one occasion). There was also one occasion where she got within about 20 yards of a huge bull moose and held a point. In every case, when the deer bolted, Rosy would chase for a bit until I called her back (except for the moose - Rosy wanted nothing to do with him). Once she actually steered a nice 5x4 whitetail buck (140-150 B&C) back towards me and he passed about 30 yards away.

I think that bucks must have a lot more stink on them. Rosy has a fun time picking them out anyways.
