kind of unusual-pics included

Yesterday afternoon, glanced out the sliding glass door while sitting in the rocking chair with our 2 year old and I just happened to look up. Saw dozens upon dozens of turkey vultures circling just above the back yard and over the woods behind the house. Not all that unusual here to see 10 to 12 even 15-20 of them at a time, but there were dozens and dozens of them. My wife counted 34, but by the time she had started counting some of them had circled back behind the treeline. I did take a few pics.

Today our dog has gone nuts several times barking at these buzzards out in our pasture, and I think there are more around today than there were yesterday, they are sitting in the trees all along the fencerow out at our front pasture, which is really weird. There is nothing out there dead that I know of.

Have a couple cows still due to calve anytime, most recent cow to calve has been probably close to two weeks ago, and all the calves were accounted for this morning. All I can figure out is that our neighbor up the road processes deer for himself and his friends and he dumps the leftover parts back near the river, which does not help our coyote problem. Where I think he is dumping the parts is down river of us about a 3/4ths of a mile away, but these birds are all right out in front of our house. Would not think they would be up here if that was what they were after.

Guess I will take a walk over that way this afternoon.

Sorta creepy, especially with that over cast sky. Reminds me of "The Birds."

btw- when my parents were married, we lived in Hinkley, Ohio which is the highest elevation in northern, Ohio. For some reason, thousands of buzzards come to roost there each spring. Not sure why, but I guess the elevation has something to do with it. It's sort of a well known thing and hundreds of bird watchers come there. Nothing like looking up and seeing a few hundred vultures flying to the same area.

If you weren't familiar, you'd think the end was coming.:D

There's a huge gathering of buzzards on the power lines in town. For some reason that's where they stay. Really strange seeing them while you're parked at the intersection. They live there I guess.

Yeah, kind of figure they are enjoying the treeline view from the hilltop on our front fencerow Eric. Not the highest elevation around, but they can probably see pretty well down into the bottom from there.

Have never seen quite this many here alltogether all at one time.

I had a roaster one time that the hens wouldn't have anything to do with. Well one day I walked out and saw him laying on his back and a bunch of buzzards circling around him. I thought. Oh man my roaster is dead. He opened one eye and a said "Shhhhhh! Buzzards!!!":D:D:D

Yeah William they are thick like that here to. I have them on video eating a calf out of a cow while she was trying to have it.

I hate the things.

I have lost several calves due to buzzards...

Ok, that is just nasty. And gruesome. You video taped that? Was it too late to save the calf?

Yes! By the time I saw the cow it was to late to save the calf.

We have been telling the Fish and Game Department about them and what they were doing. They didn't believe us and said that they had to have proof that they were doing this. So I gave them the proof that they wanted. They now give us a permit every year to shoot 150 of them per year which our local trapper takes care of...

Well, all I found in my field was some gray and white hair, and there were birds all over where I found that hair earlier in the day. Looked like rabbit hair. Kind of hard to believe all those buzzards were out there over a rabbit. Will have to watch and see if they come back around today.
