LeafWiper
Hey guys, I need your help. I was very lucky to harvest a 13 point buck the last day of PA rifle season. The buck was shot in archery season by a friend who hunts on our farm. His broadhead hit high and right behind the shoulder, only going into muscle. The deer had scarred over the entry hole but when butchering, we found his broadhead and about 4 inches of arrow inside the deer. Along with about 8-10 ounches of puss infected tissue. Yes, it was nasty! Visual examination of the rest of the meat looked good, no smell or discoloration, but is this deer fit to eat??? Any input is appreciated. buckee
Just carefully cut out amply around the area of infection, and then some, being careful not to touch any other meat with the contents of the infected area, and it'll be just fine. I'd eat it, and have
shockwave
Exactly what Buckee said, cut plenty of the tainted meat away as you can..
toddyboman
First off Congrats on the buck Lets see some pic of him I was very lucky to harvest a 13 point buck the last day of PA rifle season. Along with about 8-10 ounches of puss infected tissue. Yes, it was nasty! YUCK I bet that was nasty.:eek: Just carefully cut out amply around the area of infection, and then some, being careful not to touch any other meat with the contents of the infected area, and it'll be just fine. I'd eat it, and have Yup do what is stated here and you should be OK ;):)
indianaboy
Like everyone else said. Cut around the infection. I myself would probably only use the hind quarters but it is up to you how close you want to get to that front shoulder.
Southerngirl
around here we would throw out the front shoulders and keep the rest, better safe than sorry
Tominator
I don't think I'd eat that one shoulder, but the rest of the deer should be fine.
wtnhunt
Congatulations. Think I would agree with Chris here, just dont eat that shoulder, but save the rest.
Turkeygirl
Yeah..I'd toss that shoulder but everything else should be fine if it smells/looks alright. Congrats on the deer...we need photos.
Guest adrenaline_junky
I would have to agree with everyone else. Either cut around the infection or dispose of the one front shoulder. You should just be able to cut around the infected area and keep the rest of the meat. Exspecially if the meat don't smell or isn't discolored. Congrats and lets see some pics. Bowtech_archer07
First off.. congrats on a real nice buck!! As far as the meat, I would probably throw out that shoulder and the rest of the deer should be fine if there is no discoloration or smell coming off of it.
