WNY_Whitetailer
Went to the gun shop this morning and picked up the gun that I was thinking about purchasing for a couple days now...It is a used Ruger Single Six in 22lr/22wmr with a 6 1/2" barrel. It came with both cylinders. Here are some pics...The only real noticeable wear to the gun is on the bottom of the grip. There are a few scratches. I brought it home and gave it a good scrubbing and it looks pretty darn good...Especially for $289...I can't wait to shoot this little 22...I can already see upgrades in my near future...New grips, springs, polishing and smoothing things out internally...It's a sickness. But, I believe that I am in good company... and here's the pic that shows some of the marks on the bottom of the grip panels...
Texan_Til_I_Die
Great purchase. I can't believe you actually found a decent used one in stainless. I took the grips off of my Single Six, sanded them down completely, then applied about 20 coats of lemon oil, followed up by 4 or 5 coats of tung oil. I really liked the looks, but after "only" 7 or 8 years of hard use, they're starting to wear, so I'm going to have to do it again soon. Oh yeah, and watch the sharp edge on the bottom of the ejector housing. After I sliced my finger open a couple of times, I finally went in and flattened it out with a dremel. There was actually another used one there in stainless just like the one that I purchased w/a 6 1/2" barrel...Only, it was $40 more and it came with Pachmayr grips, not the factory wood grips. I am about to embark on the grip refinishing portion of this mini-project. I know how to stain wood and stuff like that but I need to find out the correct procedure for sanding down the grips and refinishing the panels... Rem308
Great looking revolver...I bet that's a lot of fun and very handy to carry out on the trail.
WNY_Whitetailer
I'm 10 coats of Tru-Oil in to refinishing those stock grips...I removed the medallions and used 220 grit sandpaper to remove the spotty black paint from the raised portions of the medallions. I then sprayed the little things with Rustoleum flat black paint. I let the paint set for about a minute and rubbed the medallions on a piece of paper to remove the black paint from the raised portions exposing a shiny looking eagle with a black background. A few more coats of Tru-Oil and I will be finished...Then to see if I like the high gloss look or if I need to tone it down to a satin finish with some stock sheen and conditioner.
