craig mack
What kind do you guys suggest? I have a power one already, I'm looking for one for the early season. I want a 8 or 10 inch model.
RangerClay
I would get a Lazer but I have to ask a question? What do you plan to fish for? An 8-10" hand auger is a lot of work if you are just fishing for perch. You may want to check out www.Iceshanty.com they have an awesome ice fishing forum and you will get more suggestions. craig mack
I fish for what ever bites. I will probably get a 8 inch lazer. I catch more perch than anything else. Thanks for the link.
RangerClay
I will probably get a 8 inch lazer. I catch more perch than anything else. Thanks for the link. I would suggest a 6". That is what I carry with me. The biggest fish I have ever pulled through was an 8 pound northern and he just squeeked through. A 6" will cut a lot easier than an 8". muggs
I had an Eskimo 8" hand auger that would cut through ice as thick as 18" (about the max for my area) in no time. I'd recommend that to anyone. Unfortunately, it fell off my sled and I lost it. I bought a much cheaper 10" auger that is a piece of junk. It binds and genearlly is the worst auger in the history of ice fishing, and/or ice augers. I'm upgrading for this season. I'd suggest spending the extra cash on a quality auger, and sticking to 8" max width.
Shaun_300
It all depends what you're fishing, if you're just fishing the smaller fish, 6" is plenty. It's always nice to have the 8", but it is harder to turn, especially when the ice is really thick. It takes a pretty big fish to not be able to get through a 6" hole. I believe they even have 7" in some brands, they'd be perfect. I got dad a 6" Eskimo hand auger a few years ago for Christmas and it'll cut through 3 feet of ice like a hot knife through soft butter. The 8" will do the same, but you're huffin' and puffin' a bit more.
LifeNRA
I would suggest a 6". That is what I carry with me. The biggest fish I have ever pulled through was an 8 pound northern and he just squeeked through. A 6" will cut a lot easier than an 8". Boy, I can vouch for that! I have a 6" one. When cutting through 12 inches or more of ice I can zip through that like crazy! Guys that have an eight inch auger work their tail bones off! But then again, if I owned a power auger, there would not be a need for a hand auger! ;)
craig mack
I have a 10 inch power auger for the thick stuff. I just want something for the early season when I dont need to lug the power auger around. Thanks for the advise.
