bluelund79
In reply to asking about the 935....excellent gun. Decent recoil w the 3.5" mags. I wished I would have bought one earlier, but my gun purchases were already dictated. I paid 390 out the door at Wal_mart!!!!! The only downfall is the fact it doesn't shoot 2 3/4" shells. I guess I will have to shoot the 5 boxes of those through my pump gun. I have the synthetic stock on mine and I hunted in some nasty weather with it with no problems. Cycled rounds in rain and snow...Came with 3 chokes, lock. What more do you need, I really became a Mossberg convert this year...3 shotguns and a rifle in 2007. Good luck on your search and purchase. LETMGROW
P.M. Born2Hunt he has a combo that is really awsome out to well over 40 yds. I can't remember for sure what choke he is using for sure and don't want to mislead you. Lynn
Chrud
I would go with the 835. I haven't looked at the price of a 500 for a while, but a couple years ago I bought my 835 with a black synthetic stock and a 26" barrel from Gander Mountain for $279 I believe. Might not be right on the price, but it was a bit under $300. I went with the 26" barrel because it still patterns great for turkeys or other longer range shots but is still pretty easy to move around. Plus, with the 835 you have the option to shoot 3 1/2" shells.
Guest cdschmidts
I got a Pure gold in my (2005) 835 ,Great pattern @ 40 yds.with Federal Premium Mag Shock # 5.Also bought an older 835(Like pictured above in woodland camo)came with cantaliver r/s barrel and 24" turkey barrel;that came with a custom homemade choke, that killed @ 55 yds.with Fed.Premium Mag Shock # 4's.I have experienced jamming on bot 835's and my 935,but only with factory chokes.I also use a Mad Max choke ,it also patternsgood @ 40yds.Buy the combo package gun, you'll really like the choice of barrels, when it comes time for turkey. Turkeygirl
I don't think you can go worng with a Mossberg either way...go with what one feels most comfy to you. I have a full size Mossberg 500 20 ga I hunted small game, turkeys, and deer with for 9 years, I bought it used. Sunday I bought a Mossberg 500 20 ga. Super Bantam turkey which is lighter and more comfy because it's made for smaller framed people and women like myself. I can't wait to pattern in but I think it'll throw some good patterns. My old gun I shot a turkey at 35-40 yards with a factory choke. I think this one will be as dependable as my big mossy.
hoyt19
what kind of distance will the 835 shoot turkeys at? also what is a good turkey choke for this gun? In answer to what distance with the 835 shoot turkeys at, that is all dependant on the choke and shell used. I would think its safe to say that a 3.5 is better then a 3 which is better then a 2.75. There are execptions to that for sure, but it's better to have and not need then the other option.
Nodlew
Distance will be determined by the pattern, at a given yardage, that your gun/choke/load combination produces. You want more than 5 pellets within a "harvest zone," basically from where the feathers meet the flesh of the head upwards including the neck vertebrae and the brain. Ideally, you set up a target at varying distances and shot a few (or many depending on your wallet and interest) loads with different size of shot. The best pattern at the furthest distance is your effective range. This is a very simplified version of the process and I'm sure it has been covered in greater depth here on the forum. Long story short, if you want a "bad mutha" set-up for the 835, go with the Rhino Choke spitting out a 3.5" Nitro--2 1/4 oz load of 4-5-7 hevi. Is this necessary? NO? But the results will speak for themselves.) Good Luck!
