.308 vs. .270

No pox on the .270............it's a great round. But I'd pick the .308 if the choice were between the two. The range of bullet weights (read "versatility") in .30 caliber is quite a bit better than in .277". Both are reasonably flat shooters.......the .270 has a little edge there. But the ability to readily load bullets from 110 gr. to 200 gr. gives the .308 my vote. Some may also argue the .308 is more inherently accurate than the .270 and I'd have to agree with them. Also the .308 is short action, potentially speeding up cycle time, strengthening the action and reducing gun weight.

I have to agree with you Strut10...at the same time, I'm sure there's quite an argument the other way. What type of shooting are you going to do with this rifle? Will it be in the woods and possibly need to be a brush gun?

Both calibers are great, you won't be disappointed, but I would go w/ the .308.

Just my $.02

I have both. The 308 I recently bought (about 5 months ago). It's a little Kimber 84M Montana. The 308 is an outstanding all-around big game caliber for N.A., and certainly for anything in the lower 48. It's what I would go with. Oh, wait a minute, I already did go with it. :-) Get you one; you won't be sorry!

Let's really get something going here and include the '06.

It's like Chevy, Ford and Dodge.

I really prefer the short action in a bolt gun but in all honesty I don't have a .308 bolt gun. This is only because of my smaller stature that I have this preference. Some folks will tell you the auto loaders cycle faster with a short action. Maybe they do, but in the real world who would know the difference?

My son has .270's and the deer get just as dead with them as my '06 or .308. The .270 is a flat shooter for sure, but in our surroundings it really isn't a factor. Of any of the three choices all are versatile and ammo is readily available in nearly any price range. All are a good choice and will kill any North American game animal with no problem.

I'd still buy the .308. The difference between the two ballistically is negligible. Only possible advantage to the '06 over the .308 is the ability to shoot 220 gr. bullets. But considering most all of the premium, heavy-for-caliber bullets for the .30's are 200 grainers.........it's really a moot issue.

.308..............yep.

I have to agree with Strut. I like the 308 better for the reasons he states above. I have never been a big fan of the 270 and for basically no solid reason mine are not the choice when I go hunting (2-270's - 1 270WSM). I used to have a Ruger #1 in 270 that I did kill deer with but eventually traded off. I have a couple 308's and when not using a magnum will take one of those or my 7-08.

For deer, the .270 here has been great for me, and I have killed quite a few deer with the .270. Really would depend on what your intentions are with the gun, your definition of "all around caliber". The .308 is a great round too as is the .30-06. Strut is right on the versatility though, the .308 there are heavier bullets available. Personally in an all around, my next rifle will be chambered in .30-06.

i dunno maybe i'm just the only one that would rather have the 270. I've had both a ruger 308 bolt and a rem 270 semi auto. i like the feel of my rem better than the ruger, there is no question that they both will do damage on a whitetail but if you were hunting something bigger i don't think the 270 would be the best choice..

Sorry I didnt say, I live in Utah so it will be for both, I got mountains on one side and desert on the other. For right now I am going to use it on yote's since the other big game seasons are over. But when they do start again I am going to use it for elk mostly. Maybe a deer or two. But generally it will be for coyotes. Thanks for your input guys, I posted this on a couple other forums and there has been an overwhelming favorite the .308

308. is a great gun, i took my moose and my forest deer with that gun, For long shots when i hunt the farm land i use a 25-06, I find for those long shots the 308. does not cut it from bullet drop, missed me a good deer last year:(. Id get a 30-06 great bush gun, Great for long shots, Good knock down power, good bullet variety, its an all around great gun.

I have both the 270 & 308 in a Tikka, T3 and like both of them!

The last thing I shot with the 270 was an elk at about 125 yards! One shot and it took 2 steps and dropped!

I have shot several animals with the 308 also and it was 1 shot kills!

I agree there is a wider bullet selection with the 308, but after I found what bullet was the most accurate in each of them, that is the only one I use!
