Question for everyone

Libraries are a good way to start. There are some databases online as well that are helpful. Depending which college you are attending, many have online databases that are available to their students.

Just be careful in your essay and you are not biased and do not seem one sided. Have a powerful thesis statement and have evidence of all your findings and you'll be fine and report on both sides, not just you're side. Good luck

BTW, the NRA is probably not you're best bet. Think about it.....the NRA is going to tell you what you want to hear. Not that it's a bad thing but for this type of assignment, it's probably not the best. If it were me, I would start with a government supository(sp). Also, I would go back in time to show how it all became to be. Maybe when people see why we have it, they may be persuaded a little more.

Persuasive speeches are biased. You are trying to persuade someone to come around to your way of thinking. Using the NRA is just fine, but use plenty of other sources also. Leave emotion out and stick to concrete facts. Include "unbiased" sources such as the government, or independent research agencies or universities. Make sure to add plenty of negative facts about your opposing view from different sources. Do so in a manner that seems fair, but biased. Keep it persuasive, not just informative. See argumentative writing also.

I have found most often in life, that people who are read 'facts' tend to forget them, and that many will disregard those 'facts' as nothing more than biased propoganda.

The most convincing argument is one where you would have people convince themselves. That is accomplished by asking relevant and open ended questions...Have them walk away with points to mull over.

My favourite..."We hear every day how many lives firearms take. The media is forever prepared to jump on the misery and sorrow of others.

Have you ever considered, how many lives a day that firearms save?"

Then substantiate that question with relevant examples...such as the female security guard who, recently saved, perhaps, a hundred lives...or the teacher who went to his car for his sidearm and returned to the school to stop a deranged person from commiting another Columbine...et al.

Yup...to win an 'argument', make your dissenter's mind your weapon...provide questions that spawn others...

...and if you want to see it work...just ask my wife, she does it to me all the time !!:D
