Guest LIVEWIRE
Too many of todays hunters put too much pressure on themselfs They believe that it's mandatory to shoot a monster buck, eveytime out I will let a 125 walk ,did this year too, several of them. as for me #1 if the buck won't go on my wall I let him walk #2 does taste better # 3 and the most important it's not the kill ,it's not the bragging rights,it's the fact that I have the opportunity to go to the woods and hunt with no time limits or quotas to fill Just to be able to go hunting anytime i want. I still have a tag in my pocket,if a 130 walks by ....ThWack...if not ,the next day i'll be back hunting again with no pressure, to do anything, but enjoy the woods and all it has to offer me. To go hunt a day is a very successful hunt if you see some game it's better,if it gets close, even better and if you get a shot well you've had a very ,very good day in the woods. You see i hunt to feel good i don't have to kill to be happy. It takes a long time for some to find this out ,when you do then you'll be happy hunting everytime out. Too many hunters put pressure on themselfs like the tv heros. always have to get a bigger buck every show . some day these farms can only grow them so big, even on steroids, then what will sell their shows? you'll do the same thing ,if your not careful. It happens every year in hunting camps all over. One of your friends shoots a big buck on the first or second day in camp and i'll show you a ticked off group at the end of the week. competition rears it's ugly head and now hunting takes on a new meaning. take some advice ...hunt for the enjoyment of hunting ,not what you kill,or weapon, or size of kill. I've seen grown men kick big dents in the doors of a fairly new truck because they forgot their release. why not leave the truck alone and go scout somewhere make it fun not work! this is just my opinion after 45 yrs. in the woods with my bow chasing deer.[
Tominator
I see your points, but it's tough to dictate to others what others should do. People are going to do what they want. Deer hunting is a lot of things to a lot of people, and how you hunt isn't necessarily how they will hunt.
Guest Finn
Nope...ain't like that. You must not have been reading what guys and gals on this site talk about....most everyone here enjoys the outdoors for the outdoors, not just killing a monster buck. Ravin R10 man
Heck no!! I spent almost three weeks before the buck I shot came by, and by that time I had shot three does, and probably let around 20 bucks walk..NO pressure here! Shooting a big buck every time out isnt even realistic..even with the "pros"
buckee
Another "Heck No" here I think I understand what you're trying to say, even though I disagree with your TV personality statement, about the pros "always have to get a bigger buck every show". That's just not true. They just like to show exactly what your talking about,...enjoying the outdoors, watching deer walk, and deciding to take a mature animal, rather than an immature one. The biggest difference is, they get a lot better choices on where to hunt, than us average Joe's do And besides...how can you make a video series called "Monster Bucks", if your not shooting nice mature bucks. I do understand though what you were trying to address in your post, and I'm pretty sure it's the Ego of some hunters, vs others. A little friendly ribbing with your friends is always a good thing, but I always leave my Ego at home. Pretty hard to enjoy yourself in the outdoors if all you're there for, is to feed your Ego.... Was I close ?
hoytman26
No way. I've been bowhunting now for 11 years and I love the outdoors for more than just the kill or killing the monster. I hunt around 30 or 40 times a year and I have killed 12 deer with my bow. Which means this, in 11 years I've hunted around 300 to 400 times. I have shot 3 button bucks, 4 does and a small 6, small 8, 16" 8pt and 1 167" buck. Yes thats right (1) 167" buck. So in 11 years and over 1200 hours in a tree I've shot 1 buck I would call a monster and in those 11 years I've never put pressure on myself. Being able to do what I do is a gift from GOD and I love being in the woods enjoying GOD's country. That's what hunting is about!!!!
crazylegz70
Excellent point. I am lucky enough to live in Illinois and i can honestly say that i have let deer pass by my stand this year and it is difficult for me because i have been taught that meat is more important than a set of antlers. Guest adrenaline_junky
Not me, I'm about the hunt wether or not i shoot a deer don't really matter. I've had the opportunity to shoot 4 P&Y's in 3 years, but it wasn't for bragging rights or just to fill my tag. I just went out there and did what I love to do. Like I said the only thing that matters to me is being in the woods and just enjoying mother natures gifts to hunters. It's not killing it's hunting. I guess this is what was meant in my post,it just didn't come out right. I wouldn't even begin to tell anyone what to hunt or when to shoot what ,but rather enjoy the hunt for what comes your way.enjoy the outdoors. most replies, are from real hunters, that for the most part is part of your life. This, you take serious enough to do the right thing,my point I was trying to make is you shouldn't be in competion with nobody but yourself and not to put undue pressure on yourself when you enter the hunting woods. here comes a little 8 pt basket rack,I would shoot it ,but those guys at camp will jump on me big time ,or what will so -n- so say???? this is the point I was trying to get out.nothing more. sorry if I was misunderstood. Tecumseh
I'm just happy to be out in the woods.I've got two does in the freezer and have one tag left to fill and don't feel the pressure to kill a big buck I've passed up several small bucks and don't want to kill a small buck just to say I killed a buck. JoshM
Big no here...I go for the excitement of deer hunting. I can sit in a deer and watch a doe for hours and have my heart pumping the whole time. I just love how relaxed the woods are and the amazing animals that are in them. indianaboy
No its not about shooting a big deer. But I will not shoot anything that isnt at least 3 1/2 or older. I will hunt everyday with out killing a buck if I dont see a 3 1/2 old. I enjoy every moment though.

Sam16
Everytime i get frustrated about not shooting, or seeing the deer i am trying to harvest for a long period of time, i just remind myself of one thing. If it werent for the tough times we have in the woods, the successful times wouldnt be nearly as sweet. My dad always says "If you killed a buck every time out, it wouldnt be any fun." However, i do still get frustrated very easily. Maybe because i know that i am not blessed with the most time in the woods, since i can only hunt weekends. Just my thoughts... elkoholic
I think that most hunters go through phases, from the "if it's brown, it's down" to not caring about much but the opportunity to get out there one more time. I personally am at the tail end of the spectrum, but, I must admit I like the taste of venison and taking a deer is a much appreciated bonus. I usually take a respectable buck each year and although the kill, or opportunity to kill, is the reason I hunt, the best days afield this past year did not involve killing anything. The day I saw 11 moose, 5 of which were bulls, may be the best day I had all season. Then there was the day my son and I rattled/called in six different buck, one was within 20 feet, and the day was filled with magical moments, or the day my daughter and I hunted in frigid cold and high winds on an otherwise beautiful sunny day in the mountains with several deer encounters. With a deteriorating back I can only hope for many more years to come where I can become one with the beckoning mountains. I do not have to kill something to enjoy the next sunrise, but come summer the smell of grilling venison is not too hard to take either. LifeNRA
I am by no means a trophy hunter. I just want to HUNT DEER! When out with the bow with just three years under my belt, I will shoot almost any legal buck, why. Because I can, and I want the freezer filled! But then, thats what the doe tags are for. If out with the rifle, which for the last 33 years. I tend to be more selective the first week, the second week, any legal buck again will do. Am I bad person for hunting this way, no! I don't care what deer was taking as long as it was a legal deer to shoot! This year was the best year for deer I ever had! Seen plenty of bucks during the archery season, missed a real nice eight pointer and a big doe! But I was out every weekend for six straight weeks! Hunted the first full week of the rifle season, tagged nothing. The very last day of the rifle season I shot a seven pointer. Was it a monster, no. But it was my deer! Zambo
I am lucky enough to hunt on a large piece of private property. Some in our camp hunt for an antler score. Some hunt for any legal buck. I hunt for a mature whitetail regardless of score. This is my choice. I think any deer is a trophy as long as you are happy. Just like in life we need to be true to ourselves and not worry about others expectations.

colescott1
I don't compete with anyone...but I do get frustrated when I spend several hours in a stand without seeing anything interesting. My mind tends to slip back to what I "could have" been doing... playing with my son or daughter, etc. They will sometimes accompany me, but not late season when it gets too cold. Its a bad habit, I know.... but I value my time with them a great deal. Show me a fox, or a black squirrel, and all is ok....even if not a deer. But, show me empty woods, and I wonder why I bothered. Dogg6
I just enjoy being able to get out and hunt. It doesn't bother me whether I take a big buck, smaller buck or doe. If it is an animal that I will be happy with harvesting, then I shoot. If not, it will walk. The only pressure I put on myself is to get a few in the freezer to feed the family.
