Got myself a Remington 597!

On Sunday I had to take my buddy from Alberta down to his grandparents' place down near Kingston, so I decided to take a trip over to the sports store in Belleville to see if I could get my dad a scope for Christmas. They didn't have what he wanted so I looked at the guns and ended up walking out with a Remington 597 LS Heavy Barrel in .22 LR, got a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x32 to put on top. Took it out yesterday and did a little shooting to get the scope zeroed in, man is this thing ever a tack driver!!!!:D:cool: Had a box set up with some circles and crosses in them. My last group of 10 rounds was just one big hole the size of a dime. This was from about 25 yards or so. What a great shooting little rifle. I'll be sure to take some pics of it when I get up to the lake again. ;)

Here's one off the Remington website.

I got one back in March and am fairly happy with it. Did you have any problems with it jamming? I had a terrible time with mine for the first 500 shots. It seemed if I loaded the magazine up the whole way it would jam but if I loaded up 7 it would be fine. Lately though it has been pretty good. Also I've found that mine likes hollow points much better than round points. Good luck with yours and have fun!

I had a couple times that the shell wouldn't fire, it'd just go "click" and not fire, eject the shell and the next bunch would shoot fine, it'd only happen once in a while. Out of 8 clip loads I shot it might have happened 3 times. I'm just trying to let it break in, who knows how long it sat on the shelf without the action being moved or anything. I figure after I fire 1000 rounds out of it it should be all loosened up and work fine.

I too have a 597 and it outshoots my Ruger 10-22 without a doubt. In the 3-4,000 rounds I have put through it the 597 has jammed only once. Not bad for a rimfire. The Ruger will sit in the cabinet and will be way off when I take it out. Adjust the scope a bit and it will be spot on. Next month it will be off again. Re adjusting the scope brings it back on. 597 no problem!

NICE but it won't get you into the OTPG. We cannot hunt with a semi auto rifle here in PA so I was never much interested in one. What brand of ammo do you shoot out of it. I heard they don't shoot the cheaper stuff very well.

I'm already in the OTPG with two other guns. ;)

I'm shooting the Remington Yellowjacket HP's out of it right now. Seems to like those better than the Thunderbolts. But I'll experiment with different ammo as well.

I have had good luck with the Yellow Jackets as well. Haven't found any CCI ammo the little 597 wouldn't digest.

Even the stingers? I have a little Savage semi auto my dad got me for Christmas when I was 11 or 12, about the only ammo it'd fling out consistantly would be the CCI Stingers, at close to $9/box. Not sure if the action spring was too tight or what, but I usually couldn't get through a whole 10 shot clip with regular ammo and the dang thing would jam like the empty cartridges didn't have enough momentum to clear the action. This 597 will fire them out a good 7-8 feet. :D
