hangunnr
Didn't know they made the mini 14 in 6-08. Are you sure of the chambering? The 6-08 is basically the same as a 243 Win. hangunnr

RangerClay
Does Ruger make a clip small enough for it to be a legal deer gun?
wtnhunt
New to me too. I knew they made the mini 14 in .223 and in 7.62 X 39. Never heard of them chambering it in a 6 mm. A 6 mm is adequate for deer. Just went over to the Ruger site and they now are offering the ranch rifles in a 6.8 spc. For decades, Ruger Ranch Rifles and Mini Thirty rifles have been the rifles of choice for applications ranging from the farm and ranch to the deep woods. Ranch Rifles, available in .223 Rem. and now 6.8mm Rem. SPC, and Mini Thirty rifles in 7.62x39mm, are the perfect choices for small and medium-sized game. All Ranch Rifles and Mini Thirty rifles come scope-ready from the factory.
Texan_Til_I_Die
I'm a big Ruger fan, but I have yet to see a Mini-14 in any caliber that shot worth a darn out of the box. If I were planning to use one for deer hunting, I'd spend the time and money to get it worked into shape to at least shoot close to MOA. LETMGROW
Does Ruger make a clip small enough for it to be a legal deer gun? The Mini-30 has a staggered box magazine which holds 5 rounds as it comes from the factory. NY law limits an autoloader to 6 round capacity. tped
Supposedly the new ones have a better barrel on them. I just bought a mini14 in 223 from a friend of mine and he provided some targets - he was getting 3/4 inch groups and felt that someone other than him could do better as he is 76 years old with those old eyes holfing him back. I have not shot it yet to see for myself.
Adjam5
The old minis were nice but could not hit the broad side of a barn at 50 yards. I have one from the 80's. Stainless with a folding stock. 181 series. It stays in the safe. The newer minis, according to Ruger are supposed to blow the doors off the old ones. They have this barrel dampener on it. I guess it is similar to the Boss system on the Brownings and Winchesters. That 6.8 SPC has much more knockdown power that the .223 and is a better close quarters combat caliber for entry. It was designed by Barrett Firearms. It has more than 1000 ft/lbs at 100 yards which is more than adequate for deer It uses a 115 gr bullet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6.8_mm_Remington_SPC
